UN Secretary General António Guterres said Friday “deeply concerned” at the escalation of violence in Jerusalem, where more than 150 people were injured on Thursday in clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police.
Guterres called on leaders “on all sides” to help “calm the situation.” “The provocations on the Holy Esplanade must cease now to prevent further escalation,” said the UN Secretary-General.
He also reiterated his call for “maintaining and respecting” the status quo in all other holy places in Jerusalem, and detailed that the United Nations is working “in close contact” as regional partners to calm the situation.
“The Secretary-General reiterated his commitment to helping Palestinians and Israelis resolve the conflict on the basis of relevant United Nations resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements,” the office of the UN Secretary-General added in a statement.
At least 156 people, including about 150 Palestinians and three Israeli policemen, were injured this Friday during clashes on the Esplanade of Mosques in Jerusalem, coinciding with the second Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and against the backdrop of growing tension in the area.
The clashes began in the morning and ended with more than 150 Palestinian injuries, according to the emergency service Red Crescent, which specified that this figure corresponds to those who had to be taken to nearby hospitals or clinics for medical attention.
The Israeli Police reported the detention of hundreds of Palestinians and added that three of their officers were injured by the throwing of stones by the demonstrators.
A police spokesman said that the incidents began this morning with the throwing of stones and fireworks by hundreds of Palestinian protesters who had come to the site carrying flags of the Palestinian National Authority and the Hamas terrorist movement. Faced with this, he added, the troops waited for the end of the morning prayer to intervene and disperse the protesters, triggering clashes.
The incidents took place not only in uncovered areas of the Esplanade but also within the Al Aqsa Mosque itself, the third holiest place in Islam and rarely accessed by Israeli security forces.
Israeli security forces said that “violent rioters” barricaded themselves inside the mosque and continued to “incite violence”.
