Edomex: complaint filed with FGR for lion cub rescued in Ecatepec

After the rescue of an African lion from the tumultuous streets of the municipality of Ecatepec in the State of Mexico, the authorities filed a criminal complaint with the federal public prosecutor to investigate the mistreatment to which the animal was subjected and those responsible could be found.

This specimen was rescued in the early hours of Thursday, April 14, when the presence of a lion wandering the streets of the municipality of the State of Mexico in the “Las Américas” subdivision was noted.

He was seen by local residents who recorded the finding and subsequently reported to the authorities. When he was rescued, he was referred to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).

However, the Attorney General's Office reported that he was in very poor health, in addition to having been torn and fainted by the people who held him captive.

For this reason, the complaint was lodged by the head of the Department of Environment and Ecology of the municipality of Ecatepec, Acoyani Baroco Bonilla, who was instructed by municipal president Fernando Vilchis.

Baroco Bonilla went to the offices of the Attorney General's Office (FGR) to investigate and arrest those responsible for the mistreatment to which the lion cub was subjected.

This complaint relates to the crimes of animal abuse and illegal possession of wildlife and was registered under the folder FED/MEX/ECAT/0001432/2022.

Similarly, Fernando Vilchis published that they are continuing the search for those responsible for the aggression and urged the FGR to carry out investigations and do justice so that they are “the voice of those who have no voice.”

The African lion cub, aged between 6 and 10 months old, was rescued by members of Civil Protection, members of the Ecatepec Firefighters and staff of the Department of Environment and Ecology of the State of Mexico, who took him to the Ehécatl Ecological Park, where he remains under surveillance.

However, Baroco Bonilla stated that his general state of health was poor, as he had malnutrition, muscle atrophy and poor hygiene. In addition, neighbors had pointed out that the animal looked disoriented.

But that was not all, because the report given by the specialists who analyzed it indicated that the specimen presents, apart from the advanced state of malnutrition, difficulty breathing and swallowing, distended abdomen, dehydration, state of shock and difficulties in standing.

Profepa assured that veterinary doctors will continue with treatments to keep the puppy alive, so he was transferred to a CIVS for medical treatment and proper care. But they reserved the survival forecast.

Mexico currently allows keeping an exotic animal as a pet, as long as it is not an endangered species, in accordance with the Mexican Official Standard issued by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

Of course, this must be purchased through official animal vendors who verify that the puppies were born in captivity.
