In the evening hours of last Wednesday, April 13, the sad news was confirmed, Freddy Eusebio Rincón had died, an event that went around the world. His score against Germany, in the last minute of the group stage of the 1990 World Cup Italy, was kept in the memory of many, who even consider him the most important in the history of the Tricolor.

After the news broke, friends, former footballers, players, coaches, managers and teams expressed themselves with words of solidarity and condolence to their families, they also recalled some anecdotes with the former player of the Colombia national team. One of them was Iván Zamorano, who remembered the arrival of 'El Colosso' in the Real Madrid locker room.

In the 1995/ 96 season, the Merengue club confirmed the signing of Freddy Rincón, who then played for Napoli in Italy, and became the first Colombian to play for the most winning club in Europe, a major event in the country. Despite this, the passage of 'El Coloso' with the Spanish team was neither the best nor the most outstanding, as he played only 21 matches, 14 in LaLiga, four in the Champions League, two in the Super Cup and one in the Copa del Rey, in which he scored a goal, made an assist and received four yellow cards.

The coach of Real Madrid at the time, Argentine Jorge Valdano, said that the Spanish club went through a crisis, which is why Rincón could not stand out, while the former Colombian player assured, in an interview with Gol Caracol in 2020, that he could not succeed at Merengue because he lacked “being white” and said, “I did not suffer the racism day by day, but, to play for Real Madrid, yes. With Valdano it was very difficult because they had a lot of pressure on him.”

In an interview with the AS Colombia newspaper, Iván Zamorano, who coincided with Rincón in that Real Madrid squad, recalled some anecdotes about the coffee grower. He stated that he received the news of his death in the morning of Thursday, April 14, and that it has been very difficult to assimilate the death of a colleague and friend. In addition, he noted that now what remains is to support the former player's family.

Regarding his relationship in Madrid, in conversation with the newspaper AS, he said:

And he added, “we all know the power of him, he was an elite athlete. He had extraordinary DNA. He was always number one in physical controls and had the possibility of adding technical aspects to it, like a good Colombian. That helped me get closer to the strikers and to be able to give me a couple of assists. They sent me others, but I didn't get to see them.”

Regarding racist acts, he said that “in football we are all the same, but skin color sometimes generates this kind of thing. He said in an interview that he felt a little discriminated against, so those of us who were there tried to help him.”
