With silver bombs, authorities seek to cause rains in Tamaulipas and Nuevo León

The project seeks to contribute water filling to three dams and complement irrigation to the DR-025 district

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) reported on Thursday that a cloud stimulation project was activated to generate rain in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, in order to address the lack of water in both states.

In a statement, he explained that the project seeks to “cause” rain to contribute to water replenishment to three dams and supplement irrigation to the DR-025 district, “due to the deficit caused by the payment of water to the United States” in September 2021, according to the Water Treaty between the two countries.

This treaty was signed in 1944 and establishes that Mexico must deliver about 2 billion cubic meters to the United States every five years.

Sader explained that both projects will be undertaken through the National Commission for Arid Zones (Conaza), with the support of the Mexican Air Force, from the Military Air Base (BAM) 14, in the municipality of Apodaca, Nuevo León.

To this end, Conaza designed a stimulation site with an area of 400,000 hectares, which will allow the storage of runoff water in the three dams that supply the metropolitan area of Monterrey, in the eastern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental.

Authorities estimated that, through flights by which a team of technicians on board an aircraft releases silver iodide molecules over the clouds to promote precipitation, rainfall could be generated in the next 15 days to supply water to the state's dams.

In addition, they hope to be able to fight fires in the Cumbres de Monterrey natural protected area, in the Sierra de Santiago, which now total more than 20 active days and have affected some 4,500 hectares.

On Wednesday, Mexican Civil Protection said that if weather conditions allowed, this Thursday the process of stimulating clouds in the region to generate rain could begin, with the support of the Mexican Air Force aircraft to control the forest fire that began on March 24.

The source recalled that the metropolitan area of Monterrey is going through a “critical” period in terms of water supply for the population, “which is why various actions are taken in terms of saving and consumption, as well as the exchange of liquid with productive sectors.”

RAINS IN OTHER STATES

Mexico's Agriculture portfolio also reported that it has successfully carried out flights to stimulate clouds and promote rainfall in Sonora and Baja California in order to counteract the effects of drought on both entities.

The secretariat stated that the main beneficiaries of the project, which was first launched in Mexico last year, are livestock producers in the region, since runoff favors the presence of grass and allow the harvesting of barley, food for animals.
