Gerardo Fernández Noroña, federal deputy for the Labor Party (PT), reiterated that he will be the candidate representing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's (AMLO) nation project, self-described as the Fourth Transformation (Q4), in the presidential elections of 2024.
In an interview with journalist Daniel Rosas, the petista spoke of his political aspirations around the upcoming presidential elections and assured that the left profile he possesses “is not represented by any fellow member” of Q4.
Although he praised the work of those who could represent the cherry party in 2024, Fernández Noroña believes that he would have a good chance of beating them, because, according to his statements, “they are underestimating the people.”
“Claudia Sheinbaum is a splendid, super-prepared, hard-working companion; she is a very capable woman. Marcelo Ebrard has been a splendid chancellor, he is an extraordinary man with great ability and (Ricardo) Monreal, who has a bad press with his colleagues, I think he has not been recognized for the work he has done since the Senate of the Republic. Adam Augusto is my little brother, he is a very capable man,” said Fernández Noroña.
However, Fernández Noroña said that if he was running for president of Mexico, he would do so only with the coalition of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), the PT and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), flatly ruling out the possibility of launching as an independent.
“For me the important thing is movement. They would need to make me a real scoundrel for me to decide to run in a different way. They have to win in the poll and if they don't beat me then I will be the candidate”, commented the petista.
During the interview, the PT legislator pointed out that although Q4 has prioritized the lower class, it has not benefited during the administration of López Obrador, since, according to his comments, there is corruption in the legislative and judicial branches.
“Our movement says: 'First the poor, 'because we have not reached the poorest. If you get here and you find a lot of people in the Metro, on the street, then that can't be those are the poorest and we haven't reached them. All that has to change,” he said.
According to the consultancy firm Enkoll, Mexico City's Head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum, leads the preferences with 37% of the respondents who would vote for her to be the candidate, while in second place is the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard, with 20%.
According to the poll, 35% of respondents said they would vote for Morena in 2024, 4% for the PT and 1% for the PVEM, bringing López Obrador's party alliance to 40%.
In second place is the National Action Party (PAN) with 19%, while the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) won 8% and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) 2% of the preferences.
It is worth mentioning that Ricardo Monreal, leader of the Morenista bench in the Senate of the Republic, assured that Sheinbaum Pardo is the favorite candidate of López Obrador.
“Everyone knows that she is an aspirant from the moment the president announced her a year ago, it doesn't seem abnormal to me, it seems normal to me that she is in that process and that she is fighting so that she can participate inside Morena. I'm not going to speak ill of her, I don't think it's time, I wish her luck,” Monreal Ávila said last April 8.
