The state of health of the African lion cub that was rescued early Thursday in Ecatepec is considered delicate and specialists are trying to preserve his life, reported the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa).
The clinical report of veterinarians is that the lion (Panthera leo), approximately 6 months old, has poor health, in addition to being fanged and torn, the federal agency noted.
The specialists' report explains that the specimen has an advanced state of malnutrition, difficulty breathing and swallowing, distended abdomen, dehydration, shock and unable to stand.
For these reasons, they warn that their state of health is very delicate and they reserve the survival prognosis.
Profepa assured that veterinary doctors will continue with the necessary treatment to try to keep the puppy alive and promote its recovery.
The feline was transferred to a CIVS to receive medical treatment and proper care, environmental authorities said.
It also reported that it will take appropriate action to proceed against whoever or those who are liable for these damages that violate the dignified and respectful treatment of the specimen.
The feline was wandering the streets of the Las Américas subdivision in Ecatepec, and in the face of the citizen alert, elements of the municipal police, firefighters and Civil Protection came to the scene.
Later the staff of the Ehecatl Ecological Park joined to support the containment of the specimen and give notice to Profepa.
Once the protocol began, elements of the Environmental Procurator's Office came with specialized equipment and personnel to verify the state of health of the feline, who observed the serious health conditions.
Personnel of the Fire Department and Civil Protection Department of Ecatapec responded to the alert about an African lion cub that was wandering on José Francisco Córdoba Street in the Las Américas subdivision.
According to residents of the area, at dawn they noticed that an apparently disoriented lion was walking through the streets of the subdivision and immediately notified the authorities.
Due to the physical characteristics of the animal, it is estimated that it is the product of reproduction in captivity without adequate conditions for its healthy development.
The mayor of Ecatepec, Fernando Vilchis Contreras, reported that the specimen would remain under the supervision of the veterinarians of the Ehécatl Park pending the intervention of the federal authorities for environmental protection, a situation that occurred on the same day and the protocol to provide it with adequate care was initiated.
In October 2021, personnel from the same municipality rescued a moreletti crocodile that was located inside a home in the San Agustín neighborhood, which is presumed to have escaped from a nearby house. On that occasion, the reptile was sheltered and transferred to the facilities of the Ehécatl Park.
