Vallenato is one of those rhythms that, regardless of the corner of the national geography, any Colombian has listened to one and has not been indifferent, and it is, in turn, one of the icons of Colombian culture abroad.
Thus, the Government of Cesar and the Mayor's Office of Valledupar announced that, starting in 2023, the Vallenato Chair is planned to be implemented in the educational institutions of the official sector in the municipality.
This educational and cultural initiative and project, as reported by the Government of Cesar in a statement, has been working for several years on its planning, structuring and execution, and aims to safeguard traditional vallenato music.
Likewise, the authorities foresee that with the implementation of the 'vallenato chair', learning spaces will be generated so that students can learn about the origin, evolution, creators and characteristics of traditional vallenato music in the city's public schools.
In order to allow new generations to be involved in the process of safeguarding this folkloric and cultural expression, declared by UNESCO as an intangible heritage of humanity.
“Every day that passes, memories, myths and legends of the beautiful origin of Vallenato culture are carried away, so we need teachers to train and nurture the knowledge of children and young people in order to safeguard the cultural roots of the territory,” commented Andrés Meza Araújo, governor in charge of Cesar.
According to what the authorities of Cesar have projected, it is expected that with this new subject, students will not only know the history of vallenato music, but will also have the opportunity and opportunity to develop their artistic skills and abilities in music, dance, performing arts and other expressions of this nature.
According to the Government of Cesar, there is currently a draft of the guidelines that will guide the Chair, to which final adjustments will be made at the next meeting to be made by the secretariats of education of the department and the municipality before the end of April.
During this meeting, a final document will be structured, the content of which will be the teaching hours, the curricular guidelines and the learning criteria that must be applied in the institutional educational projects of public schools in Valledupar, following a resolution issued by the Ministry of Municipal Education.
Once the roadmap has been defined, the Government of Cesar is already advancing with the commitment to elaborate the guiding text of the 'vallenato chair', which will define the teaching methods that teachers and directors of educational institutions must take into account.
“It is here, that it is also understood that this initiative must go from the public to the private, so that educational institutions in the latter sector also participate, ensuring that all children in the city can receive this training in general,” warned the governor in charge Meza Araujo.
For his part, Mayor Mello Castro said that the best legacy that can be left to new generations of students is the consolidation of the 'vallenato chair', since “it is necessary for young people to deepen their knowledge of our music, its roots and its compositions. It will be a subject that will ensure the prevalence of our musical heritage as a constant dialogue and that it does not stay in the parties or at a festival”.
From the Government of Cesar, they also stressed that the implementation of the 'vallenato chair' will coincide with the opening and commencement of operations of the Vallenata Music Cultural and Convention Center.
