After years of community care and cleaning efforts, Bacocho Beach in Oaxaca achieved its environmental quality certification and, even beyond, it managed to recover the habitat of four species of sea turtles that year after year come to it to nest and spawn, however, its splendor soon attracted the groups real estate agents who started excavations for the construction of a complex of 80 apartments.
The Oaxacan coast is one of the few remaining biodiversity-rich paradises in Mexico, villagers who try to save this space for the conservation of sea turtles say with concern. Urban construction will be catastrophic for the local ecosystem and will lead to many other massive projects that will consume the natural wealth of the beaches.
To save this important tortuguero field in the Puerto Escondido area, environmental groups asked the government of Alejandro Murat to stop the works that will alter the ecological balance and also launched the petition on the change.org platform No to the construction of the lucrative project of 80 apartments in Bacocho Beach, Oaxaca.
In it they argue that it is scientifically known that light scares off turtles, which is why a thousand lights on every night could scare away the various species. He adds that people and ATVs moving over the area would make nesting impossible.
Another possible problem is the management of wastewater that would lead to pollution like that of previous years.
Environmentalists explain that “this project, although politically approved, is not properly evaluated for sustainable urban development nor does it consider the environmental impact it will leave on the tortuguero camp that is next to the land where they are beginning to excavate.”
Until Friday, April 15, the petition accumulates almost 70,000 signatures in support, however, Krystal Chávez, one of the organizers, encourages more citizens to join this effort to preserve natural spaces that help preserve marine life.
The government of the entity, through the Office of the Procurator for Environmental Protection (PROPAEO), assured that the only authority with the power to respond whether or not this real estate development meets environmental impact requirements is the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
However, he said he asked the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection to expand information on the urban project in Playa Bacocho in Puerto Escondido.
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) launched the ZOFEMAT Vacation Operation, Easter 2022, with the aim of protecting the natural capital of the Mexican coast.
Inspection and surveillance actions will take place from April 11 to 23 at the beaches and protected areas of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatan.
Approximately 11,000 kilometers of Mexican coastline will be monitored in these 17 states of the Republic with the purpose of inhibiting the introduction of motor vehicles, verifying compliance with environmental legislation, and preventing the commercialization of flora and fauna listed in some protection category.
Puerto Escondio is one of the most important tourist destinations, not only in Oaxaca, but also on the Pacific coast, so a great effort has been needed to preserve the natural spaces that have faced an invasion of tourist developments in recent years.
