On April 13, the promoter Triller Fight Club surprised with the announcement that Andy Ruiz, who was world champion in 2019 after defeating Anthony Joshua, would return to Mexico on July 16 to fight in the capital against the undefeated Tyrong Spong, in an event that was speculated would be at the Plaza de Toros.
Despite the announcement spread on the promoter's social networks, two days later information was leaked that the Mexican would have to reschedule the fight, because he already has a contract signed with the Cuban Luis Ortiz, who is nicknamed King Kong and who called Ruiz a “coward”.
According to information published by Mike Coppinger, ESPN journalist, the fight between Andy Ruiz and Tyrong Spong will not happen according to plan and a new date will be sought to relocate it.
As mentioned by the president of Triller Fight Club, David Tetreault, they were not aware of the agreement that the Destroyer had previously reached an agreement with the promoter Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), who had already planned the fight against King Kong Ortiz.
“We are working amicably with PBC to ensure that Ruiz meets his obligations to both parties. If we had known that PBC intended to fight him before, we would never have chosen this date,” Tetreault told ESPN.
Due to this situation, the two promoters will now have to work together to find the ideal dates to carry out the two fights: Andy Ruiz vs Luis Ortiz and vs Tyrong Spong, so the chance of seeing the “first Mexican heavyweight world champion” in CDMX will have to wait.
