Conservative British MP Imran Ahmad Khan announced his resignation on Thursday after being convicted on Monday of sexual assault of a 15-year-old teenager.
Khan, 48, and a member of the Conservative Party, said he will appeal the verdict, because he denies the facts for which he was convicted. However, it justifies his resignation because the judicial process is long announced.
“I came, with regret, to the conclusion that it is intolerable that my administrations remain without a Member to bring his voice to Parliament for years,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter, stating that he “resigns” and “leaves political life.”
Following the verdict, a spokesman for his party, to which Prime Minister Boris Johnson also belongs, announced the exclusion of Khan “with immediate effect”.
During a party in January 2008, Khan gave gin to a teenager. According to the prosecution, he later took him to another floor, put him on the bed and asked him to watch pornography before sexually assaulting him.
The court heard the victim report that he was forced to drink gin before asking him to watch pornography and recalling that he felt “frightened, vulnerable, numb, shocked and surprised” after Jan, then without any political charge, touched him until he approached his private parts and attempted to sleep in it room.
The complaint was filed in 2019, shortly after Jan, who has always denied the facts and also blames the victim with certain traumas, was elected deputy in the December general elections. At that time, he explained, “everything overflowed” and chose to take legal action, the British press reported.
Khan, 48, will be summoned at a later date to have his final judgment read to him.
The resignation of this deputy by Wakefield, in the north of England, forces a new election to be held, which seems difficult for Johnson's party, greatly weakened after the fine for breaking the rules against covid, in a historically left stronghold.
The penalty against the prime minister was for attending on June 19, 2020 in the Cabinet Office a party for his 56th birthday, allegedly organized by his wife, who on Tuesday apologized “unreservedly” for that event and admitted that she has paid the penalty.
