Three Colombians will have the opportunity to play in the finals of the Central American Concacaf competition wearing the Seattle Sounders FC jersey: Jimmy Medranda, Yéimar Pastor Gomez and Fredy Montero.
Montero, who had just been the figure in attack of the Washington State franchise in the elimination of the León Club of Mexico with an overall result of 4-1 on March 18 , was a substitute this April 13 during the 90 minutes in the first leg semifinal against New York City FC, the current MLS Cup champion.
Seattle was solid in attack and despite not having coffee players on the pitch as a replacement, he set foot in the grand final of the 2022 Concacaf Champions League, better known as Concachampions by beating the New York team 2-4 on the global scoreboard.
The only goals of the engagement were converted by South American forwards Raul Ruidíaz in the 28th minute and by Santiago Rodríguez at 51′.
As happened in the first leg semifinal, coach Brian Schmetzer did not make variations in his initial tactical scheme until the last leg of the game.
In the 70th, 77th and 84th minutes he took Nouhou Tolo, Jordan Morris and Raúl Ruidíaz (injured) off the pitch to enter Kely Rowe, Obed Vargas and Will Bruin, respectively. Before that, the US strategist maintained a 4-2-3-1 formation with South Americans Xavier Arreaga, Nicolás Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidíaz on the payroll.
Seattle qualified for the final after eliminating Club Leon from Mexico in the quarterfinals; Motagua of Honduras in the round of 16; and now New York City FC in the semifinals. The Western Conference club of the MLS is only 180 minutes away from winning its first international title, in the finals that it will play against Pumas UNAM, the university team that has come from eliminating Cruz Azul in semis:
With just under 10 minutes on the court, Jimmy and Fredy held the 1-1 draw on the lap and a 2-4 win on the aggregate.
It should be noted that Freddy Montero has scored four goals so far this season: it comes from turning Leon a double in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Concachampions 2022 and also scored on Saturday, March 12, in penalty, LA Galaxy in the 3-2 victory of the Sounders, by date three of the Western Conference of the MLS 2022.
At 34, Fredy is Seattle's attacking bet to face the 2022 MLS season. The striker from Campo de la Cruz has signed a contract with the Sounders until December of this year and has earned title in the last four matches played by his team.
The next challenge for the Montero, Gómez and Medranda club before the two finals against Pumas (on April 28 at the University Olympic Stadium and May 5 at Lumen Field) will be to face Inter Miami FC as a home match this Saturday, April 16 at 9:00pm Colombian time, a match that will feature Star Plus broadcast for Latin America.
