HBO Max confirmed the series “Dead Boy Detectives”, based on DC comics

A ghost story that explores loss, pain and death, created in 1991

HBO Max has commissioned the production of the Dead Boy Detectives series, based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. This production will initially have eight episodes.

The series is described as a ghost story that explores loss, grief and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland; two dead British teenagers, and their very living friend, Crystal Palace. The characters are the ghosts of two dead children, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, who, instead of entering the afterlife, stay on Earth to become detectives investigating crimes related to the supernatural.

“I've been obsessed with this comic for a long time, so it's a real passion project,” said Steve Yockey. “And Jeremy, Berlanti Productions, DC, WBTV, HBO Max... everyone is encouraging me to run with every wild, strange and disturbing option. The result is going to be really dark fun. We were fascinated by the world of Dead Boy Detectives that Steve and Jeremy first introduced in 'Doom Patrol', and we can't wait to follow supernatural detectives in the rugged mysteries that lie ahead.”

Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) has written the pilot episode and is the director of the series. Yockey, Jeremy Carver and Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechte r of Berlanti Productions act as executive producers. Lee Toland Krieger directed the pilot and was also executive producer of the pilot with David Madden. The studio is Warner Bros. Television. Yockey, Carver, Berlanti Productions and Krieger have general agreements with WBTV.

Although HBO Max has delivered virtually no details about the series beyond confirmation, previous reports indicate that Dead Boy Detectives will star George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as detectives Edwin Payne (Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Revri), and Kassius Nelson plays Crystal Palace. Other stars of the series include Briana Cuoco as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell as the Night Nurse (reprising her role from the episode “Dead Patrol” of HBO Max's “Doom Patrol”), Yuyu Kitamura as Niko, and Jenn Lyon as Esther.

So far there is no release date for Dead Boy Detectives nor is there any clarity as to how this series will position itself with respect to Doom Patrol, a program that previously presented another version of the characters and is also covered by HBO Max.
