The latest report on the Global Food Security Index (GFSI), produced by The Economist, revealed that Colombia ranked 52nd in the world in terms of food security that the country had in 2021.
The index, which is published annually, assesses the problems of affordability, availability, quality and safety of food, and natural resources in 113 countries. According to these indicators, Colombia scored 64.4 for the previous year, behind other Latin American nations such as Costa Rica, which ranked 24th with 73.6 points; Chile, which was in box 28 with 73.2 points, and Panama in 36th place, with 70.9 points.
According to the GFSI, in the food affordability indicator, which assesses whether or not countries have comprehensive national food safety net programs, which are also properly funded, Colombia ranked 62 globally, with 70.4 points.
This category was led in Latin America by Costa Rica (30th place), Panama (36), Chile (38), Peru (45) and Paraguay (48), while globally, the countries with the highest food affordability during 2021 were Denmark, Ireland, Finland, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

For the food availability category, Colombia rose one place to 61st place globally, behind other Latin American countries such as Panama (22), Chile (26), Honduras (34), Dominican Republic (41), Costa Rica (43), Mexico (46), El Salvador (51) and Argentina (53), according to the newspaper El Espectador.
In terms of food quality and safety, according to the same medium, Colombia ranked 50th in the world, with the countries in the region that ranked best: Argentina (12th), Brazil (13th) and Chile (27th). For the nations that led this category, Canada ranked first, followed by the United States, Ireland, Finland and Denmark.
For this new edition, the Global Food Security Index also incorporated into its main measurement categories the “Natural Resources and Resilience” that the 113 countries evaluated have with regard to, as the newspaper La República learns, the impacts generated by climate change, the susceptibility of resources to a region in front of it and how they adapt to risks in order to ensure food security in that territory.
With regard to these factors, Colombia achieved the best results in this category, reaching number 20, behind Uruguay (7th place) and Costa Rica (10th). The countries that ranked in the top three places worldwide were: Norway, Finland and Ireland.

As for the countries that led the Global Food Security Index for 2021 according to The Economist assessment, they were: Ireland, which ranked first, with a score of 84. This nation was followed in their order by Austria (81.3), the United Kingdom (81), Finland (80.8) and Switzerland (80.4).
