The Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur) estimated an economic outflow of more than 140 billion pesos (mdp) by Easter and Easter holidays.
The agency indicated that this projection will especially benefit the trade, services and tourism sectors due to the rebound in domestic consumption, as well as the green epidemiological traffic light that encourages preference for Mexican tourist destinations with a more optimistic view than in 2020 and 2021.
In this regard, the Confederation also predicted an average hotel occupancy of 75 per cent in the main tourist destinations of the Republic such as Acapulco (80 per cent), Mexico City (75%), Puerto Vallarta (75%), Riviera Maya (90%), San Cristobal de las Casas (90%), Yucatan (80%), among others.
Despite this, the president of the organization, Hector Tehada Shaar, urged the continuation of compliance with the COVID-19 safety measures and to consume in formal establishments - the only ones that can offer guarantees to consumers and employees.
After two years of scourge by the coronavirus pandemic, tourism in Mexico finally sees the light again. This was observed during February 2022 when the country received 65.1% more international tourists than in the same period in 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
That is, the Republic went from receiving 1.59 million foreign tourists in February 2021 to 2.62 million in the second month of this year.
Despite this, the figures are still far from the pre-pandemic scenarios, since in February 2020 - when the first cases of COVID-19 were being reported in isolation - there was a record of 3.76 million tourists.
In February 2022, total tourist spending soared by 164.7% year-on-year, going from 799.1 million dollars to 2 thousand 115.6 million dollars. But if we compare the figure for February 2022 with that of 2020, the current figure is lower by about 220 million dollars.
For its part, the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) estimated the arrival of more than 40 million international tourists by 2022.
It should be noted that Mexico's tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP) - which until before the coronavirus health crisis represented 8.6% of the national in 2019 - closed 2021 at 7.1% and in 2022 will do so at 8.3%, according to government estimates.
Despite this, Mexico was the third most visited country in the world in 2020, a short-term phenomenon attributed to flexible sanitary measures in the country's tourist areas.
Under this tenor, the head of the agency, Miguel Torruco Marqués, indicated that, in 2021, three airports received the highest number of international tourists: Los Cabos, Mexico City International Airport (AICM), and Cancun; the latter being the most relevant, as it reported an entry of 10 million 883 thousand tourists, that is 87.6% higher compared to 2020.
And it is that during the holidays, the beaches of Cancun become a tourist spot with the highest concentration of international visitors. Prior to this Easter holiday, nearly 800 passengers are in Terminal 2 of Cancun International Airport (AIC), according to information from local media.
