With the idea of diversifying the Liga MX competition with Major League Soccer (MLS), both leagues agreed on a special edition of the Leagues Cup in which club America and Guadalajara's Chivas will face Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC).
Through an official statement, Liga BBVA MX announced two exhibition matches that will be known as the Leagues Cup Showcas e. In a doubleheader, the tapatia squad will face the team of Javier Chicharito Hernández and the Americanists will compete against LAFC.
The LA Galaxy vs Chivas game will mean the reunion of Chicharito Hernandez with the club that formed him in professional football. In 2010, Hernández Balcázar left the Sacred Flock, so 12 years later he will be reunited with his former team in a friendly duel.
Although the event was presented on the afternoon of April 14, the Leagues Cup Showcase will be held until Wednesday, August 3 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California, United States.
Chicharito Hernández is currently the top benchmark for his club and for the MLS scorers, so facing Chivas will represent an unprecedented event for the tapatia fans.
According to the sports authorities of both leagues, the friendly matches will be expected to be a sample of what is expected in the Leagues Cup, a tournament that will start in the summer of 2023. This was stated by the Liga MX and MLS:
“The double day will serve as a one-year preview and celebration of the expected start of the Leagues Cup, the official one-month annual tournament between MLS and LIGA MX that will start in the summer of 2023 and in which all 47 clubs from both Leagues will participate next summer.”
