Dozens of cleaners working in Callao have taken to the streets raising their voices of protest since last Tuesday and have paralyzed their work due to non-payment. As a result, it is already three days since garbage is not collected and the streets are full of garbage. In addition, some Protestants took to the streets to destroy the stock markets, thus causing the main avenues to become a source of disease infections.
These workers belong to the Eslimp Callao company and what is also required of the Municipality is to increase the salary of 300 soles for 1,500 workers who clean the streets.
This event has occurred in the main avenues of Cercado del Callao, such as the jirón Saénz Peña, Dos de Mayo, Guardia Chalaca, Republic of Panama, Argentina and others where an unbearable smell is generated for the neighbors.
This is not the first time that this problem has occurred, a neighbor assured that in 2020 the same thing happened, but it was solved after 3 or 4 days and in December 2021 in the same way.
“We are now 2022. We pay taxes, cleaning and sewerage, and we don't have to pay the blame for mismanagement. Mr. López, it is a shame what the Chalaco people are experiencing, if the position is too big for you, take a step aside. We are experiencing a pandemic that is not over yet, and we cannot continue to live with infections,” said one neighbor.
NEIGHBORS' COMPLAINTS
The accumulation of garbage has caused neighbors to complain about the bad smells it produces. Pictures from Good Morning Peru show how an elderly man had to go outside with his broom to try to end this.
“How can it be possible that all of Callao is like this. It's all because of the idiosyncrasy of the governors and aldermen, this situation is regrettable,” he said.
Thousands of people with businesses have also been harmed, because they sell breakfast and other food on the street, but with the bad smell, no one wants to eat them and this is a loss for them.
“We have two days with this garbage in Callao, you can't work like this. Nobody approaches and the district looks very ugly,” added one breakfast vendor.
On the other hand, the shredder Saénz Peña is very close to the Callao market, but a neighbor who left there commented that this food center is clean and the problem is on the street.
“Inside the market everything is clean, the thing is outside. We don't know when this is going to end,” he confirmed.
Neighbors have also complained about the presence of rodents, as the smell attracts them. “We can't go on like this, today has dawned worse. It's a pestilence, it's scary because rats are heard, children can't play, we have to be seeing where we step, it's totally unhealthy,” said a lady with her baby in her arms.
On the other hand, the Municipality of Callao has imposed a brigade with neighbors and volunteers to join in cleaning the streets of the district. That is why the workers of the company appeared in front of the municipality and in a confrontation with the police the aggressions with sticks and brooms began.
