The Barbie doll line has inspired animated productions in the cinema, but only now will a version for the more adult audience come from the hand of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. The Australian actress Margot Robbie will be in charge of playing the blonde and will be accompanied by a brilliant cast of stars. Recently, it was reported that Will Ferrell joined the production based on Mattel's iconic toy.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor will play the role of the CEO of a toy company... will it be Mattel? Everything would seem to indicate that yes. While Robbie has the lead, the rest of the cast consists of Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp and America Ferrera.
The new film will mark Ferrell's return to cinema after premiering Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga for Netflix in 2020. Another of his most recent roles include The Shrink Next Door, a black-humored television comedy in which he starred with Paul Rudd on Apple TV+.
The Barbie film under the eyes of Greta Gerwig
Barbie will be directed by Gerwig, nominated for an Oscar for her films Lady Bird and Little Women. After making her way as an actress, she only made her directorial debut in 2017 and was recognized for her coming-of-age style to capture stories focused on female characters. Currently, the filmmaker born in Sacramento, California, is one of the few women who have been considered in the Best Director category at the Oscars.
It is unknown what his vision will be like to bring the famous doll into the world of flesh and blood. Will it be a toy brought to reality, one person or both? According to sources close to the project, there would be a “meta aspect” in the development of the script, but other main details are kept hidden under lock and key. The protagonist argued that her fictional pair promotes “trust, curiosity and communication during childhood, and empowers children to imagine themselves in aspirational roles, from princess to president.”
Margot Robbie, known for bringing Harley Quinn to life in DC movies, makes her way through playing another woman in fiction that has been part of the childhood of girls and boys throughout different generations. She will not only be in charge of starring in the film, but she will also appear as a producer through LuckyChap alongside Tom Ackerley. Robbie Brenner, from Mattel's film division, and David Heyman (Paddington) will also work on the production.
