Which mayors of the CDMX will have dry law during Easter

The measure will apply to any commercial establishment that sells alcoholic beverages, including department stores and even mobile applications that have home service

The Holy Week celebrations are about to take place and, as part of the prevention and security measures, authorities in Mexico City have chosen to implement dry law in some of the mayors of the Mexican capital.

According to the Official Gazette of Mexico City, three mayors have so far announced that the sale of alcoholic beverages will be suspended in their districts during Easter Week, namely: Magdalena Contreras, Iztapalapa and Xochimilco.

In the case of the Magdalena Contreras mayor's office, the dry law will apply from 00:00 hours on April 14 and until 23:59 on Sunday 17. In this way, no commercial or public road establishment located in the territorial demarcation may market alcoholic beverages.

With regard to the mayor's office Xochimilco, the sale of alcoholic beverages has been suspended since last April 9 and will continue until the 18th of the same month, this measure has been was imposed as a result of the festival of the Snow Fair in Tulyehualco. According to the publication of the Official Gazette of Mexico City, the dry law will apply to wineries, grocery stores, supermarkets licensed for the sale of wines and spirits, self-service and department stores.

It was also emphasized that the regulation will take into account those mobile applications that market alcohol with home service or that give it away type of drinks.

For its part, in the Iztapalapa mayor's office the sale of intoxicating drinks will be suspended from 00:00 hours on Thursday, April 14 and until 23:59 hours on Friday, April 15, this derived from the celebrations that take place in the demarcation during Easter week.

This measure was published last Friday, April 8 in the Official Gazette of Mexico City, where it was clearly specified that the dry law will apply to all commercial establishments located within the territorial perimeter of the Iztapalapa mayor's office; this includes wine shops, grocery stores, supermarkets licensed to sale of wines and spirits, as well as self-service and departmental stores; this measure shall also cover any measure that is temporarily installed on the occasion of fairs, festivities and popular traditions on public roads.

However, it was emphasized that only commercial establishments with zonal and neighborhood impact that sell prepared food, will be authorized to sell alcoholic beverages by cope or only at the time established in their permit.

According to the Official Gazette of Mexico City, the purpose of implementing the dry law in the aforementioned municipalities is to preserve order and guarantee the safety of citizens during the Easter holidays.

According to the same document, any person who fails to comply with the measure “shall be referred to the corresponding Civic Court for the imposition of the sanction that is legally applicable, in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Commercial Establishments, the Law on Civic Culture, the Law on the Institute of Administrative Verification and other legal provisions in force in Mexico City”.

According to the provisions of the law, any person who fails to comply with the measure imposed by the authorities will be subject to different sanctions, which may be: an arrest of 25 to 36 hours, community work from 12 to 18 hours or a fine ranging from 21 to 30 Units of Measurement, that is, between 1,882 pesos and up to two thousand 687 pesos.
