The Italian race completed its second day after 152 km between Palma di Montechiaro and Caltanissetta where the mountain was the protagonist like Colombian cyclists.
The second day proposed a libretto similar to that of the previous day, although this time with the climbers who sought to escape early to take the mountain points.
Among them Nordal from Biesse Carrera, Kadota from EF Education EasyPost, Lacchi from Team Qhubeka, Burchio from Team Work Service, among others as well as Andrés Mancipe from Colombia Tierra de Atletes who got into the first group to try to escape.
While the group of escapees took time apart from the squad, the favourites' teams heeded the call of their leaders to keep a safe distance from the escape.
The competition for this day was quite tough given that the terrain became complicated with some climbs and then the descents that had to be taken with caution to avoid complications and falls in the lot.
Colombian cyclists from Colombia Tierra de Atletes had a very good day for their conditions, mostly as climbers, where they faced great riders such as Vincenzo Nibali of Astana Qazaqstan, Domenico Pozzovivo of the Intermarché Wanty Gobert, among others as the winner of the day Damiano Caruso who although belongs to the ranks for Bahrain Victorious for the Giro de Sicilia came as leader of the Italian National Team.
Mancipe and the fugue group managed to be above 3 minutes apart from the main lot from where they pressed the passage less than 50 km to be able to dispute the stage, in addition to a good position in the overall standings.
Teams such as Eolo Kometa put their chest on the chase less than 40 km to the finish line, which helped to close the gap between the two groups. Only one rider remained 15 km to go: Stefano Gandin of Team Corratec from Italy, but he wouldn't have much work left as the squad had his foot on the accelerator for the shot.
In the last part the last escaped when they entered the 4 km to the end and since then the favorite climbers have enlisted to make their presentation for victory. Before that, coffee racer Cristian Rico tried to get out of the pack but was hunted.
The main capos did not give permission to any more escapees and with a strong race pace they selected the strongest to compete in stage 2. There Caruso would win, followed by the 'Shark of Messina' Nibali who entered 2nd and Kenny Elissonde of the Trek Segafredo 3rd.
As for the Colombians, the best of the day was Edgar Andrés Pinzón of Colombia Tierra de Atletes who got into the 10th place with 3 seconds apart from Caruso.
13th was Daniel Muñoz (Drone Hopper Androni Giocattoli), 19th Germán Darío Gomez (Colombia Land of Athletes) both at 13″, then Juan Carlos López from Astana Qazaqstan entered at 17″ in 21st place, followed by Yeisson Casallas of Colombia Tierra de Athletes at 21 ″ and in 27th place.
Diego Alba of Drone Hopper Androni Giocattoli entered 23 ″ from the winner of the stage, followed by Rafael Pineda who was placed 36° to 25 ″, Cristian Rico reached 1′31″ in the 48th position the two runners of Colombia Tierra de Atletes.
Nelson Soto was 85° at more than 5 minutes and his teammate in Colombia Tierra de Atletes, Andrés Mancipe, was 90° to 6 minutes and 1 second after being involved all day in the escape.
Finally, Jhonatan Chaves of D'Amico UM Tools did not finish the stage due, apparently, to a retirement during the competition.
