Authorities from Quintana Roo identified the human remains found at Gaviotas Beach in Cancun on March 15, which belong to Francisco Luis Talavera, a Paraguayan citizen who was reported missing after entering a beach in the state.
In a statement, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo (FGE) reported the identification of the remains, which was carried out thanks to the comparison of DNA with an immediate family member.
“The FGE reports that with genetic testing and the comparison with the profile of a close relative, it was possible for specialized experts to identify F.L.A.T. -of foreign origin-, whose skeletal remains were found on March 15 in Playa Gaviotas,” said the agency.
Francisco Luis went swimming on a beach in the municipality of Benito Juárez on March 7, after which he could not be reached by his family and friends, who reported him missing to local authorities.
On March 15, eight days after the Paraguayan tourist disappeared, tourists who were at Gaviotas Beach noticed the presence of human skeletal remains, which were analyzed by FGE experts, who reported that a pelvis and a vertebra corresponding to the spine had been found vertebral from abroad.
To supervise the investigative work and at the request of the Quintana Roo authorities, Francisco Luis's mother moved to the Mexican Caribbean state from her native country in South America.
Thanks to her presence in the entity, the woman was able to provide a blood sample to the authorities, which was compared with the genetic material obtained from the bone remains found in Cancun, which yielded a 99.9% match.
“Once the Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo completes its rigorous procedures and orders the delivery of the remains of the young man who disappeared in Cancun, the Paraguayan Embassy in Mexico will immediately begin the corresponding repatriation procedure,” said the authorities of that entity.
The young man had moved from his country of origin to spend his vacation in the famous Mexican tourist destination, and although it is unknown whether he was in the company of anyone else, his relatives filed a timely report of his disappearance to the competent authorities.
The Prosecutor's Office had initially expressed the suspicion that the remains found on the beach may belong to a murder victim, since recent events in the entity would indicate that a violent crime could have ended the life of the person located.
Days before the discovery, on March 12, a businessman of British origin was killed while traveling aboard his vehicle through Playa del Carmen, in which a minor was injured.
The murder took place on Xcalacoco Avenue, where the man was intercepted by armed men who shot at him on different occasions, causing his instant death on the spot.
According to information from AFP, the man was a resident of eastern Playa del Carmen and two men were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder; in addition to reporting that the minor traveling with him was his daughter.
