Ricky Martin has a long musical career and this time Livin' la vida loca, one of his most iconic songs, was considered a heritage for posterity.
Since 2000, the Library of Congress of the United States has added to its National Recording Registry a list of 25 songs that it considers should be preserved.
According to National Public Radio (NPR), this record is intended to promote efforts to preserve the “sounds of history” and therefore often include tracks from the most endearing musicians.
It is for this reason that it represents an achievement for the Puerto Rican's career that his song Vive la vida loca, which was released in 1999 and written by Desmond Child and Draco Rosa, was inscribed to the 2022 list.
Ricky Martin mentioned for The New Day that he was very happy that that song was positioned that way.
“No matter how many years go by, everyone's reaction to listening to Livin' la Vida Loca remains the same as it was 23 years ago when we launched it. It is a very powerful song that represents the fusion of Latin pop. It is an honor to be part of this song that has a very important page in the history of music, since it was part of the first album recorded entirely digitally and of my first production entirely in English. It is certainly a subject for history and I am very honored that it is recognized.”
Desmond Child also pointed out in an interview for the media that “music is as if it were the score of a film”, because “everything the song says is reinforced by sound effects, so that it was very visual”.
He also added that this was the first fully digitally mixed song to reach first place on Billboard and delved into Ricky Martin being the “Latin Elvis Presley of his time and a Latin James Bond”.
In addition to the melody of the Puerto Rican on this year's list, there are also songs to my father (1987), which is one of the most important albums by Linda Ronstadt and Songs in A minor album by Alicia Keys that laid the foundation for her rise to fame.
Something that is also important to mention is that this time not only melodies or albums are included, but also recordings of historical moments in the country were annexed, such as some presidential messages or the radio broadcasts of September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers were collapsed.
Here are what was selected by the National Registry of the Library of Congress of the United States for 2022:
