“The Year of My Graduation” (“Senior Year”), the new film by Rebel Wilson that arrives on Netflix on May 13. (Netflix)

On May 13, the film The Year of My Graduation (Senior Year), starring Australian actress Rebel Wilson (Perfect Rhythm), will be released on Netflix, and directed by Alex Hardcastle (Grace and Frankie). The film begins in 2002 and tells the story of Stephanie Conway (Wilson), a teenager who is part of her school's cheerleading group, of which she is the captain. The girl is the classic popular girl: she enjoys everyone's respect, she is dating the cute boy who plays on the football team, and everything seems to work out and work well. But something tragic is going to happen in her life: In the middle of an acrobatics where they form a human pyramid, the young woman falls to the floor without anyone holding her and is left in a coma.

Although she manages to stay alive, the young promise of high school remains connected to machines in an almost vegetative state until after 20 years she wakes up. Far from that image of the 17-year-old teenager, the young woman is now, in 2022, a 37-year-old woman. But how can she assume this new adult role if her last memory is of her being a teenager?

This is the proposal of The Year of My Graduation: the return of this woman to her school days who is pursuing the idea of finishing her senior year and going to the prom to recover her crown of the prom queen. Funny situations are going to happen one after another when Steph realizes all the changes that took place in the years she was in a coma. For example, he is surprised when he discovers that there are already 9 versions of the film Fast and Furious, and when he finds the cover of a magazine with Lady Gaga, he mistakes it with Madonna.

The return to school where Stephanie attended in early 2000 is going to be the entrance to a new world for the young adult. With new ways of linking and different rules of coexistence, the film tries to show that past time is not always better, but the opposite. Thus, this girl will try to adapt to this new order, and in the meantime she will try to find her true self. A comedy to enjoy and have a good time that will connect us with those classic films of the nineties.

Accompanying Wilson, a classic actress of the nineties comedies, Alicia Silverstone, starring in No Idea (Clueless), Justin Hartley (This is Us), Zoë Chao (The Afterparty, Love Life), Chris Parnell (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Jeremy Ray Taylor (IT), Angourie Rice, who plays Stephanie in her teens (Spider-Man: No Way Home), and Mary Holland (Happiest Season).
