The presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia began on Wednesday a visit to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, which seeks to show their “strong support” for Ukraine.

This was conveyed by the Estonian President, Alar Karis, through his account on the social network Twitter, where he reported that he travels accompanied by his counterparts Andrzej Duda, Gypsies Nauseda and Egils Levits.

“On the way to Kiev, a city that has suffered terribly from the Russian war,” said Karis, who confirmed that the delegation will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelensky.

A number of international leaders, such as Prime Minister Boris Johnson; European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell; or European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have also visited Ukraine to show their support for Kiev in the context of the Russian invasion.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, proposed to Moscow to exchange the leader of the pro-Russian Ukrainian party Opposition Platform for Life, Viktor Medvedchuk, for prisoners of war in Russian captivity.

Zelensky explained that Medvedchuk, of which he posted a photograph on his social networks on Tuesday in which he appears in handcuffs, was hidden for more than 40 days, and called his capture “symbolic”.

Hours before the usual evening speech by the Ukrainian president, the head of the Ukrainian Security Service, Ivan Bakanov, had confirmed that Medvedchuk was wearing Ukrainian military clothing to hide among national forces, according to Ukrainian agencies.

In this regard, Zelensky pointed out that these actions of disguising himself as a Ukrainian military man show “cynicism”. “It is important that our police and military forces also consider this possibility (exchange),” added the Ukrainian president.

After Zelensky's post came to light, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Presidency, Mikhailo Podoliak, had assured on his social networks that “today Medvedchuk has to hide in a Ukrainian prison to survive.” “His life is guaranteed by a long prison sentence,” he said.

For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov stressed that it is necessary to wait to verify the accuracy of the photograph in the face of the large flow of false information that occurs these days, according to the Russian agency TASS.

The pro-Russian leader had been under house arrest for more than a year on charges of treason. However, at the end of February, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was announced that he had escaped, according to the Ukrainian press.

The Ukrainian authorities last year imposed a package of sanctions against Medvedchuk and other pro-Russian politicians, including his wife, as part of an investigation into the financing of terrorism. Kiev then reported that all the property of these opponents is subject to sanctions for a period of three years.
