A few days ago, it was announced that the list of the richest people in the world that year after year is launched by the American magazine specializing in financial issues Forbes. In this list, it was revealed which people in the world possess the greatest fortunes.
Forbes listed in its annual ranking 2,668 people worldwide, that is, 87 fewer than 2021, when 2,755 were counted. Of these, 15 are Mexican.
According to Forbes, who heads the list of Mexicans is telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim, who is a Mexican from Lebanese ancestry, owner of important national companies such as América Móvil and Grupo Carso. It should be noted that Slim was also listed as the wealthiest person in all of Latin America, followed by fellow Mexican Germán Larrea.
Slim, according to Forbes, has a fortune amounting to USD 81.2 billion, which means that he managed to increase it significantly compared to 2021, since a year ago he had USD 55,930 million. Slim is ranked 13th in the world ranking. A year ago it was in position 16.
Larrea, owner of the Grupo México conglomerate, also achieved an increase in his fortunes, as this year he managed to accumulate USD 30,800 million, when last year he had just over $27 billion.
In total, 15 Mexicans appeared on the list of the US magazine, including Ricardo Salinas Pliego; Alejandro Bailleres Gual and brothers; María Asunción Aramburuzabala and family, among others.
The fortunes of these billionaires reached a record USD 160.9 billion, an amount that exceeds 42% of the federal government's foreign debt balance and which, in most cases, increased amid the crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the fact that the fortunes of the richest billionaires in the country are quite high, the reality is that there are people in the world who exceed their fortunes. Even that of the 15 Mexicans together.
Such is the case of the wealthiest person in the world, Elon Musk, who owns companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, who a few weeks ago was reported to have acquired a large part of Twitter's shares.
This 2022, Musk premiered as the wealthiest person in the world, because until a year ago he was surpassed by the owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos. This year, Musk has a fortune of $219 billion, while the fortune of Bezos, who dropped to second place, was $171 billion.
In third place, globally, is French Bernard Arnault, who oversees the LVMH empire, which includes some 70 clothing brands, including Louis Vuitton and Sephora. Arnault has a fortune of USD 158 billion.
In fourth place globally is Microsoft owner Bill Gates, who has a fortune of $129 billion, while in fifth place was Warren Buffett, with a fortune of $118 billion.
Taking these figures into account, and that the fortune of the 15 Mexicans who appeared in the Forbes ranking amounts to USD 160.9 billion, it can be deduced that even by pooling the fortunes of these 15 businessmen would they achieve the fortune of Elon Musk, or even that of Jeff Bezos.
The richest businessman in the world surpasses Slim's fortune and the other 14 Mexicans together, by USD 58,100 million. And compared to that of Bezos, the fortune of the 15 Mexicans is lower by USD 10 billion.
