The Mayor's Office of Bogotá began the commemoration of Holy Week in the capital with a wide variety of cultural offerings for travellers and citizens, through which it seeks to invite the nearly 200,000 visitors to enjoy events that will take place throughout the city and which will be accompanied by the authorities.

The Major Week, which began with Palm Sunday and ends on April 16, is a celebration in which thousands of foreign tourists from different parts of Colombia visit the capital to commemorate some of the most important religious festivities, as well as to learn about the creative and tourist offer offered by the city.

“If you are a foreign citizen and you are in the city during these days, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get to know several of the best known traditions of local culture. Here you can find some options for you to enjoy the season,” said the district administration, which has an agenda scheduled for travelers arriving in Bogotá.

Among the activities contemplated in the district is a visit to the Monserrate Sanctuary, one of the most important tourist and religious destinations in the city, which is located in the eastern hills facing the center of the capital, and where the Basilica of the Lord of Monserrate is built, a temple that has been preserved as a place of religious pilgrimage since colonial times.

To get to the top of Monserrate, there are different options such as the cable car, the funicular or the pedestrian path that stretches for 2.5 km along the steep slopes of a mountain that offers one of the best panoramic views of Bogotá, which is renowned for its variety of traditional food stalls and its richness natural.

“Of course, it should be borne in mind that according to the District Institute of Recreation and Sports (IDRD) this route will only be enabled from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17, between 5:00am and noon to ascend. This Easter week we expect more than 60,000 visitors on the Monserrate trail. Remember that on Tuesdays the trail closes for maintenance,” said the mayor's office of the capital.

The district also invited visitors to take part in the Way of the Cross in the Egypt Quarter on Good Friday, in which thousands of parishioners will participate in a procession representing the journey of Jesus Christ to his crucifixion on Mount Golgotha, which has been in place for more than 40 years and which includes the participation of one of the most traditional neighborhoods in the city center.

Likewise, the district administration indicated that more than 5,200 parks will be open to the public this week with a variety of activities organized by IDRD, including Simon Bolivar Park, Ciudad Montes Park and Parque de los Novios — the latter offering activities from the rental of barbecues and picnic areas, to kayak and bike canoes.

“If you are more interested in closed-door shows, a wide range of works will also be available throughout the week as part of the Ibero-American Theatre Festival supported by the District Institute of Arts, Idartes. Through performances such as “El Pardon”, “History of a Sheep”, “Song of the North” and “Readings to the Fire” that will be held between April 14 and 16, you will be able to meet international shows of theater culture without having to leave the city,” concluded the district.
