AMLO does not use AIFA, yet defended the project and assured that it will give “Amlocipina” to its detractors

At the morning conference, Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he would travel to Villahermosa, Tabasco on a flight from Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and not from Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA). When asked about when he will travel for the first time from AIFA, the president replied:

“When I can. I do it. It is a first class airport, I said it yesterday, the best there is. What happens is that more flights are going to be added little by little.”

In his speech about the new facilities, AMLO also stated that those who had an interest in having the new airport built in Texcoco are still angry about the change of plan, but he said: “I'm going to do something, I'm going to do the competition to Vitacilina, oh, what a good medicine; it's going to be Amlocipina, something like that, so that it is to be reassuring.”

In addition, the president spoke of various obstacles to stopping the project, such as amparos and a smear campaign that has consisted of the dissemination of fake news. The most recent false news circulated about AIFA was that of a plane crash.

Photos of the alleged incident circulated on social media last week and showed a DHL cargo plane split in two due to a logistical failure. However, the information was denied and at the morning conference it was reported that after verifying the origin of the photographs they can assure that they are images taken at the San José airport, in Costa Rica.

The accident occurred when the pilots of the plane, which had taken off for Guatemala, requested permission to return after 65 kilometers traveled, due to a hydraulic failure. The unit broke in half as it left the airstrip, but the two crew members were unharmed.

Before closing the topic, López Obrador reaffirmed his intentions to use the new facilities very soon: “Felipe Ángeles Airport will have more and more flights and when it comes to me, if it is on schedule, I will use it, of course I will.” , he said.

It is worth mentioning that AMLO's comments caused a stir on Twitter, where they were taken up by several users who, through the hashtag #AIFANacioMuerto, shared memes and opinions about it. In the discussion, other issues have been touched upon such as disagreement towards the poor conditions of the route leading to the facilities and the service offered.

Twitter users who follow the topic on the social network have shared information such as the list of flights scheduled today, which include only two nationals, to Guadalajara and Cancun. In this regard, Internet users said: “A magical town like Malinalco has more visitors than this airport A DAY. This is what 300 billion Mexican pesos look like thrown into the trash.”

The Felipe Ángeles International Airport is currently in the first phase, in which it will have the capacity to carry 20 million passengers. Forecasts indicate that by the end of the year it will have transported only 2.4 million people, in that sense the authorities are working to attract investment from more airlines to increase flight options.

The most recent negotiations are with one of the most important airlines. Despite speculations about this, it is known that Qatar Airways did have “talks” about flights to AIFA, but it is not a fact as Ebrard said.
