On Sunday, the auction of a Lionel Messi sticker from the 2014 World Cup closed and, as expected, the figure greatly exceeded that of any similar product from the Argentine that had been released on the market previously. This “gem”, as described by the Goldin house that handled the auction process, received nine bids in total, all above the three figures.

As announced on the official website, the final price was USD 522 thousand, almost double that of the first bid (USD 250 thousand). This amount exceeded any expectation, although it was already expected that the bid would be very high. There are only 10 similar stickers around the world that were released by the Panini company and that show the then Barcelona footballer wearing the Argentinian team's jersey and the logo of the World Cup in Brazil.

“In short, Lionel Messi's number one card in the world! This highly sought-after modern card of possibly the greatest football player of all time is ranked in GEM MT PSA 10. The presented Gold Messi is a Pop 2 and is encapsulated in a completely new PSA holder. The shimmering gold that radiates from this stunning card just out of the pack should give you goosebumps,” notes Goldin's site, adding: “It's no exaggeration to write that this limited-edition piece is rarely available on the market. This gem has the serial number '02/10′ on the back.”

The identity of the person who has paid more than half a million dollars to win the auction is kept secret. What is known is that this offer won over the previous one, which had been USD 435,000. In order to have a dimension of what is paid, at the moment the same auction house released several Messi stickers, some with the shirt of the Argentine team and others with that of Barcelona, and none of them exceed USD 2,500.

In that World Cup, the Argentine team reached the final, where they lost 1-0 against Germany. In the contest, the captain of Albiceleste scored four goals, all in the group stage, and was one of the figures in the team led by Alejandro Sabella.

While there is no record that a Messi card is worth that much, there are similar products linked to other athletes that have doubled that value. The most recent case is that of a Michael Jordan card for which they disbursed USD 1,440,000 in February of 2021. It is worth noting that this product released in 1997 was signed by the Chicago Bulls symbol and also had a fragment of the shirt he wore in the 1992 All-Star.
