Bogotá is experiencing one of the most worrying waves of insecurity in recent years and despite the measures taken by the authorities, it seems that crime does not give up. According to figures presented by the capital's Metropolitan Police and cited by Blu Radio, so far in 2022 there have been 49,573 cases of theft, that is, an average of 550 robberies per day would be occurring in the capital of the country.
What continues to worry the district is that the figures show a significant increase, because if you look at the data in detail you can see that the number of robberies in the capital increases per month, for example, in January there were 15,315 cases; in February the increase was 580, for a total of 15,895 in that month, and finally March closed with 18,363 thefts.
In addition, compared with the same period in 2021, it is concluded that in one year the increase in this type of crime has been 7.6%, with a rise of 3,512 cases. The Police document also states that the most used means of transport to commit this type of crime is motorcycles, 11% of thefts in 2022 have been committed by people who used this means, even their use is higher than in other cities. In addition to the above, it should be recalled that the 49,573 cases are equivalent to 37 per cent of the thefts recorded throughout the country.
In response to the measures taken, the authorities mentioned that in the first quarter of the year 3,010 people were captured as alleged perpetrators of this type of crime, that is, on average, 30 people are captured per day.
Levels of insecurity seem to go hand in hand with citizens' perception. Well, in February, the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce's Survey of Perception and Victimization (EPV), which revealed the data for 2021, showed that the capital shows the highest negative perception in recent years. An example is that in 2019 44% of citizens considered their neighborhood safe, by 2021 it decreased and stood at 30%.
Also, there was an increase in the rating between poor and very poor in the number of calls to 123, which went from 36% in 2019 to 43% in 2021; and the rating of the Police service fell from 32% in 2019 to 30% in 2021 as excellent and good.
Last week the security report was presented in Colombia by the Police and in the same trend in the capital, it was reported that compared to 2021 the theft increased by 18%. So far this year, Colombians have reported and reported 72,600 robberies, an average of 800 per day throughout the country, revealed the document presented by Noticias RCN.
The figures revealed that of half of the thefts committed on public roads, two out of ten are made with firearms or sharps, with the aim of intimidating citizens.
The days with the most theft are Fridays and Saturdays, where eight out of ten are on foot, but most of them escape by motorcycle. Authorities have recorded 6,652 motorcycle thefts, that is, about 70 cases per day.
