The three most spectacular waterfalls in Mexico and how much does it cost to visit them

Mexico is fortunate enough to keep diverse ecosystems in its territory; deserts, forests, beaches, jungles, mangroves and waterfalls. Most of these landscapes are accessible to visit. In the state of Chihuahua and in the state of Puebla there are three of the most impressive waterfalls that you can visit if you want to visit: Piedra Volada, Basaseachi and Tulimán.

Volada Stone Waterfall

Piedra Bolada is considered the highest temporary waterfall in Mexico. This place is part of the Sierra Tarahumara and its location is on the southern edge of the Basaseachi Waterfall National Park in the Candameña Barranca. To get there from Chihuahua it is necessary to take the Hermosillo road to the deviation that leads to Huajumar (name by which the locals know it).

The height of the Piedra Volada waterfall is approximately 453 meters high. To better appreciate this natural spectacle it is advisable to take the route that goes below, however, the Elefante viewpoint offers a spectacular view. The ideal time to plan a trip to this majestic place is in the months of July to October due to the rains. In winter, the waterfall has less water fall and is hardly distinguishable, but it is possible to venture to other activities offered by the park.

The entrance to this place is very affordable in prices, it is around 70 pesos per person, the cost of lodging will depend on whether you want to camp or rent a cabin.

Basaseachi Waterfall

The origin of its name comes from the Rarámuri language “basaseachic” which means place of coyotes. This large waterfall is also located in the Basaseachi National Park, a place that covers about 5,800 hectares of wooded area, making it the ideal place for hiking, camping and climbing.

Basaseachi is 246 meters high, the advantage it has is that it can be seen all year round because the water flow is more constant since it is part of the Mayo River. Another advantage of this site is that a few steps away is a wall of 884 meters called the Peña del Gigante. During the government of José López Portillo, this national park was created with the aim of allowing the public to get to know the pine forest, the huge waterfalls and the viewpoints.

The entrance fee to Basaseachi Waterfall National Park is 72 pesos for domestic or foreign visitors and 36 pesos local visitors. The cost of a plane ticket from Mexico City to Chihuahua ranges from 1,500 pesos to 2,000 pesos. While there you will have to use another transport to take you to the park; the price of the truck ranges from 600 pesos to 700 pesos. The rental of cabins per night costs 500 pesos per person.

Tulimán Waterfall

The Cascadas Tulimán Ecotourism Park offers a unique natural beauty. This place is located in Zacatlán de las Manzanas, Puebla. One of the advantages of visiting Tulimán is that it is only 3 hours from Mexico City. It is advisable to arrive by car, there is a parking lot.

It is possible to stay on site by renting a cabin and enjoy the waterfall, the two rivers, the mineral pool, as well as hiking or trying your adrenaline on the adventure circuit. The park is open 24 hours a day and it is possible to hire guides for the trip.

There are three spaces to get to know. The first area is where you will find the waterfall and the cabins for lodging; the second area leads to a large suspension bridge that you must cross over to observe both rivers and there is also the mineral pool where you can relax with its warm temperature; the last area has a site for camping, zip lines, a river and another waterfall called “The Cajon Waterfall”.

The price of admission for adults is 100 pesos and with INAPAM or children from 5 to 10 years old it is 50 pesos. Spending the night in a cabin is around 350 pesos per person. If you decide to go by car, the price per booth is 91 pesos but if you prefer to go by bus the ticket price is 286 pesos.
