If one of your goals for 2022 is to purchase a new or used car, you will have to take into account that, when purchasing the vehicle, you will have to pay the respective taxes to the Tax Administration Service (SAT). At the end of 2021, the quotas for the New Car Tax (ISAN) were published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).
In this regard, as of January 2022, the quotas specified in the DOF began to be applied, which correspond to the following amounts:
1. For cars whose price is between 313,163 pesos and 375,795 pesos, the ISAN rate will be 6,263 pesos.
2. For cars with the price range from 375,795 pesos to 438,428 pesos, taxpayers will have to pay a fee of 9,394 pesos
3. Cars whose price ranges from 438,428 pesos to 563,693 pesos, the tax amount will be 15,658
4. Cars with a value of 563 thousand 693 pesos onwards, will have to pay 34 thousand 477.90 pesos
Finally, if the price of the car exceeds 864,750.45 pesos, the amount resulting from applying 7% on the difference between the price of the unit and 864,750.45 pesos will be reduced from the amount of tax determined.
Likewise, Article 8 of the ISAN Law stipulated that if the units purchased by taxpayers do not exceed 272,471.43 pesos, no amount will be paid for this item, since it will be exempt from paying taxes.
The approval of these tariffs was also included in the 2022 Tax Miscellany in order that the tax is charged to all natural or legal persons who purchase a new car or, failing that, import a unit under these conditions into the country.
It should be noted that ISAN is a consumption tax, so taxpayers will be charged at the time of disposal of new cars using a single exhibition payment method. In this way, it will be taxed on the first-hand sale of a vehicle.
In this regard, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) announced that ISAN's collection was 9,337 million pesos, at the end of October 2021. Monthly revenues ranged from 870 to 1 billion pesos, at the end of the aforementioned month.
With this tax, it is planned to collect 12,113 million pesos by 2022, which would exceed the estimated 7,521 million pesos for fiscal year 2021.
In addition to ISAN, motorists or owners of motor vehicles will have to make their tenure payment, a duty that must be paid year after year for owning a vehicle and which will vary according to the characteristics of each car or means of transport.
In the case of CDMX, the following rates will apply:
- Cars up to 4 cylinders: 410 pesos
- Cars with 5 or 6 cylinders: one thousand 226 pesos
- Cars with 8 or more cylinders: one thousand 529 pesos
There are also special charges in the following cases:
- Imported vehicles: 2,786 pesos

- Vehicles for public transport: 1,212 pesos
- Cargo vehicles or private transport: 236 pesos for each tonne that the vehicle has capacity
