In the blink of an eye, a boy discovers the berries of a wild plant and swallows some. As much as parents take every precaution, poisoning accidents happen and very quickly with younger children. And not only with garden or indoor plants, but also because of accidental consumption of medicines or cosmetics.

In these cases, medicinal charcoal may be of help, at least as a first measure. Therefore, it is advisable that all families have it in their medicine cabinet, according to the German organization “The Safe House” (DSH).

However, the organization adds that this is only valid in cases of mild poisoning that parents can recognize in the pallor or slight malaise of children.

This is because charcoal has the ability to bind poison, which allows it to be eliminated between three and four hours after ingestion along with charcoal.

Medical charcoal comes in two forms: as a tablet or as a granulate. Tablets must be crushed and mixed with water. The granulate is mixed with water and stirred.

The optimal amount of medicinal charcoal is derived from the weight of the child. The “Safe House” initiative advises one gram of charcoal per kilo of body weight.

However, it is important to know that not all cases of poisoning can be treated with medical charcoal. For severe symptoms, such as severe nausea or drowsiness, parents should call emergency or go to a doctor or clinic right away.
