The discussion, debate and possible approval or rejection of the Electric Reform by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) was agreed on April 12, after it went through committees of the Chamber of Deputies; however, an unexpected turn occurred.
The members of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) decided to request the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) to reschedule this session for next Sunday, 17 of April, under the argument of having “greater socialization”.
As mentioned by the Morenist legislator Ignacio Mier, the call in the lower house was also for citizens to know in depth the opinion of this legislative amendment on energy. Therefore, they asked for a new day and date for the discussion.
The president of the Chamber of Deputies and member of the cherry party, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, after hearing this request, made the call for next Sunday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m.
After this news broke, the members of the opposition parties came out to reproach this action, noting that it was only a strategy to find ways to get the votes necessary to approve it, since with the boycott planned by the Va X Mexico coalition, the vote for Morena and her allies was lost.
Among the comments was that of Luis Cházaro, a legislator for the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), who assured, from his official Twitter account, that the vote for the Electric Reform had already been agreed with Jucopo to take place on April 12.
However, Morena, and the parties of Labor (PT) and Green Ecologist of Mexico (PVEM), “with their precarious majority”, requested a new date, a situation that they called a “lack of respect” for all deputies.
“It was agreed in Jucopo -unanimously- that tomorrow Tuesday the #ReformaEléctrica would be voted on, now, with their precarious majority, Morena and her allies are not complying with the agreement and out of desperation they move the discussion to Sunday. It is a lack of respect for all the deputies,” wrote the perredist.
Later, along with other members of the yellow bench, they published a video in which they assured that Morena postponed the debate because “they are not right”, so he recalled the counter-reform that his party presented together with the Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) and Acción Nacional (PAN), which, he said, “favors Mexico.”
He also reminded citizens that the “Bartlett Law” will not pass, because they are due to people, not to obedience to a chief, as López Obrador is for the Morenoists. For this reason, he declared that they will not allow “more crazy things from the federal government”.
Finally, Luis Cházaro warned Morena and his allies about the agreement they breached with Jucopo about the vote, as they observed that the opposition was completely willing to spend the night until the Electricity Reform was thrown out.
On this, the PRD announced, with sleeping bags and tents in hand, that they would remain in the premises of the Chamber of Deputies until the early hours or as long as necessary, same situation announced by the PRI, in order to avoid the “early morning”.
On social networks, the images of the tricolor deputies who began to carry blankets and mats to stand guard in San Lázaro and avoid “getting up early” with regard to the vote for the Electric Reform, went viral.
“We have arrived in the Chamber of Deputies! They threatened to mobilize and even prevent the passage to democracy, but we got ahead of ourselves. Here we will spend the night!” , wrote Alejandro Moreno, PRI's national leader, on his social networks along with a video showing the militancy coming in.
