The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris), through a press release, reported that Playa Hermosa, in Ensenada, Baja California is the only beach in Mexico that is not suitable for receiving tourists this Easter. This is the fourth time in a row that this coastal area has been identified as risky to health, due to constant wastewater discharges.
In December last year, health authorities classified four more beaches as unsuitable for tourism and that in 2022 managed to reduce the percentage of bacteria in the sea. These are three beach areas located in Acapulco, Guerrero and one in Banderas Bay, Nayarit. Hornos, which went from a score of 433 to 24; Tlacopanocha, which went from 448 to 15; Suave, which went from 1864 to 14; and Sayulita I, which went from 24 to 551.
For the study conducted by Cofepris in collaboration with state health authorities and the National Network of Public Health Laboratories, more than 1,900 seawater samples were taken in 17 coastal states to verify compliance with the World Health Organization (WHO) safety guidelines, which State that the presence of enterococci should be 200 or less per 100 milliliters of water.
The quantity of enterococci in the Mexican Sea is monitored for preventive purposes, since they are microorganisms resistant to adverse conditions and that, according to Cofepris, due to their characteristics, can develop in an environment with 6.5 percent sodium chloride, hydrogen potential (pH) of 9.6 and between 10 and 45 degrees Celsius. They are also included by WHO in the list of bacteria for which new antibiotics are urgently needed because of their resistance to vancomycin.
Among the consequences that it can cause in the human body are problems of the urinary tract and endocarditis, as well as infections in surgical wounds and burns. Authorities add contact with water contaminated by this bacteria can cause: fever, intestinal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, ear pain, severe and constant pain of head, eye or skin irritation.
It is worth mentioning that the list of beaches suitable for recreation is updated three times a year and can be consulted prior to the most important vacation periods in Mexico: Easter, summer and winter. This is because tourism is a determining factor in economic recovery and is largely dependent on beaches, which were crowded on the mega bridge in March, after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the recreational activities of Mexicans and foreigners.
The list is part of the Comprehensive Clean Beaches Program, in which, in addition to Cofepris, the State Health Authority, the Clean Beaches Committee, the Clean Beaches Committee and the Secretariat of the Navy participate. Together, they carry out actions such as monitoring water quality at least once a month, disseminating information and marking beaches so that the user knows if they are contaminated, implementing sanitation programs and inspecting and monitoring the discharge of wastewater.
