The Animalist Platform, one of the largest animal protection organizations in Uruguay, issued a statement on the roadworks taking place in Montevideo and called for a ban on entertainment for minors. After two years suspended due to the health emergency, one of the largest and most traditional championships in the country, the so-called Creole Week, will be held again in La Rural.
Riding gaucha is a typical equestrian activity of Argentine, Uruguayan and Rio Grande do Sul cultures (southern Brazil). It is part of the folklore and gaucho traditions of these countries. In Uruguay, in 2006, it was declared a “national sport”.
It basically consists of a rider holding on a foal for between six and fifteen seconds, but it varies according to different categories. For example, for some complete errand is used, for others bolas are eliminated, others are done bareback.
In this regard, and considering animal abuse, the Animalist Platform met with the director of Culture of the City Council of Montevideo, María Inés Obaldía. “At that meeting they informed us that the rides were going to continue and that some facilities had been improved to avoid accidents,” they said from the organization.
“The authorities took into account our request to have more veterinary staff (there was only one veterinarian to take care of all the horses),” they added. However, they request that the roadings be suspended through the signing board through a petition on the Change.org platform.
Once the 7,500 have passed, they will be presented to the Montevideo Departmental Board. The access link to the digital signature is https://www.change.org/p/juntamvd-junta-departamental-de-montevideo-proh%C3%ADban-las-jineteadas-jineteadasno.
As long as the request for the suspension of the rodeads does not arrive, the organization asked the authorities of the Uruguayan Institute for Children and Adolescents (INAU) for a meeting because “this activity must be prohibited for minors urgently”.
“We must not let children get used to and accept as entertainment the abuse of animals,” they say. For that reason, they are going to request a meeting with the Institute, “to discuss the issue of public shows where there are abused animals, such as rooted animals, soapy pigs and many other festivals that take place indoors that are very violent and cruel and are always in the presence of children”. They added: “We urge that INAU take a clear position on this.”
Among the measures they want to take, they requested a study of cortisol such as “it would be a scientific test that would demonstrate the level of stress that animals suffer”. “While we know perfectly well that they suffer, unfortunately we must prove it in every possible way,” they said.
“The study of cortisol would clearly demonstrate the level of stress in animals and that this harmful effect is present long after each activity. This would undoubtedly throw on the floor the pro-rideadas argument that says that horses do not suffer”, they explained.
They also request that “there be control over the movement of animals since they come from different parts of the country, some traveling for hours without stopping and without clear provisions on the quantity/conditions of animals that can be moved”.
“In response, the authorities informed us that in this Creole there will be no changes in relation to the entry of minors and the requested request for study will be under evaluation. We were authorized to continue our observatory in everything related to rodestrians, arrival and departure of horns, corrals, rode and post rode, veterinary care, controls, treatment during the stay, legal issues, forms of controls, etc.”, adds the statement.
“The observatory is very important because it allows us to obtain direct information about the state of the animals; how they arrive and how they leave, how they end up after each ride, the falls, injuries, blows; to know the number of animals and people injured at the end of each event - a fact that will be requested from the quartermaster. It is also important to know and observe which audience continues to support this activity,” says the animalist group, which also points out the importance of “animals being treated more carefully and that quartermaster controls are intensified”.
Finally, they reported that work in the rodeads will begin to expand into the interior of the country, “since it is there that they are done every weekend and without controls, nor veterinarians and with the greatest cruelty”.
