A Brazilian deputy demanded on Monday that the Armed Forces explain purchases of 35,000 viagra tablets, which are included in official documents on the management of military budgets.

We need to understand why President Jair Bolsonaro's government is spending public money on viagra and that high amount,” said Deputy Elias Vaz, of the opposition Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB).

Vaz said that these operations are included in the so-called Transparency Portal, a government digital platform where the expenditures of all public bodies can be monitored.

According to the deputy, acquisitions of pills that help fight erectile dysfunction were recorded in 2020 and 2021, were renewed in budgets for this year, and the product was distributed among the Army, Air Force and Navy.

“Hospitals across the country often face a lack of medicines, such as insulin, to care for patients with chronic illnesses, and the Military receives thousands of viagra pills. Society deserves an explanation,” he said.

According to the Socialist deputy, these acquisitions were made during the administration as Minister of Defense of Army Reserve General Walter Braga Netto, who at the end of last month left that office to aspire to an elected office in the elections to be held next October.

President Bolsonaro, captain of the Army reserve and who will aspire to renew his term in those elections, said Monday that there is a “90%” chance that Braga Netto will be his running mate, as a candidate for vice president.
