On April 9, the mayor of Cartagena, William Dau, was responsible for kicking off the Cartagenero Sweet Festival, an event that celebrates 12 years of activity this 2022, becoming almost a tradition that brings together, on the same stage, around 28 stalls with the best sweet samples of the capital.

The midwives lasted two years without selling the products, because the pandemic prevented them from taking their 'corotos' onto the streets of la heroica to show locals and tourists the best of sweet gastronomy; in addition, how could this event be held under virtuality, when the essence is to taste in situ the sweets made by the same women as elaborate.

The Plaza de los Coches is the setting for this festival that started this Sunday, April 10, amid the satisfaction generated by the return to face-to-face. From 10:00 in the morning until 10:00 at night, exhibitors will be able to sell their products and recover economically after the crisis generated by covid-19 since 2020.

The Institute of Heritage and Culture of Cartagena de Indias (IPCC) also expressed its support for the Community Sweet Festivals of Las Palmeras, Pasacaballos and Ararca, which were winners of the call held within the framework of this culinary event.

In addition, the Cultural Institute decided to include, in this edition, the sweets and sweets of the Portal de los Sweets, in commemoration of the 101 years of existence of this initiative. The festival has become a gastronomic tradition, and according to Oscar Uriza Pérez, director of the IPCC, with all these elements brought together, it is expected that from this Sunday until next April 17 there will be an important reception not only by foreigners, but also by residents of the city and residents of the park.

Incidentally, Uriza extended the invitation to this holiday, which not only brings together the best of traditional sweets, but also to enjoy an afternoon in the middle of traditional board games and the imposing choirs that are close to the spaces that were suitable for the exchange of knowledge about the sweet gastronomy that “makes part of the district's cultural heritage”.

Similarly, the Festival has included a program that includes concerts in churches, presentation of other musical exhibitions in the Plaza de los Coches, including the Masa Coral XII Cartagena Choir Festival concert that will take place at the Adolfo Mejía Theater.

Different delicacies such as coconut candy, milk, yams, papaya and other fruits will be the main attraction this week, and according to one of the sweet midwives, the excitement can more than the anxiety of making the best of their products known and reviving local economies.

“We have a wide variety of sweets that we have prepared with great love for all Cartagenans and visitors who come to taste. It is a tradition that we have preserved year after year; we want it not to be lost,” said the creator of various delicacies to the National Radio, adding that she expects a succession of these culinary knowledge to her children, the same one that they inherited from their previous generations.
