Nairo Quintana lived an unfortunate day at the Tour of Turkey. This Monday, during the second stage, the Colombian cyclist was involved in two falls, which made him lose time in the fight for the overall classification.

The first incident occurred with 37.8 kilometers to the finish line, when the Boyacense left the road and fell into a scrub along with other runners. The Colombian's teammates slowed down when they noticed that he was not with them and, subsequently, got off their bikes to help him.

Despite initial concern, Nairo gave a glimpse of a smile next to the Arkéa Samsic car and got back on his bike. Thanks to the work of his teammates, the national cyclist was able to return to the peloton without suffering major consequences.

However, the second mishap, less than 3.1 kilometers before arrival, was of greater magnitude and left several laserations on the left side of his body. Although the causes of the accident were not evidenced in the transmission, the main group stopped and then, when the cyclists opened to continue the route, Nairo, his brother Dayer Quintana were observed lying on the asphalt.

In addition, for Nairo's misfortune, the platoon had increased the pace ahead of the sprint definition, so it was cut off and lost 1 minute and 44 seconds compared to the other riders. Dayer, for his part, gave up 3 minutes and 40 seconds.

On arrival, the cyclist from Cómbita, Boyacá suffered injuries to his shoulder, elbow, hip, thighs, knee and left side twins. So far Arkéa Samsic has not delivered an official medical report on the condition of Nairo and Dayer: “More information to come during the day,” the French squad wrote on its social networks.

As a result of the accidents, Nairo fell to 80th place in the overall standings, 1:58 ″ behind Australian Kaden Groves (Team BikeExchange - Jayco), who took the lead after winning this second stage of the Turkish race. The day included a 156.4 kilometer route between the towns of Selçuk and Alaçatı.

Although there were some cuts due to the strong winds, most of the runners arrived grouped for the definition. Groves was ahead of the pack and was able to defeat Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) and Irish Sam Bennett (BORA - hansgrohe).

This Tuesday will be the third day, the shortest of this edition, about 117.9 kilometers, starting in Çeşme and ending in the coastal city of İzmir. This fraction will be a new opportunity for sprinters to appear, since, apart from a fourth-class port at kilometer 27, most of the route will be flat.
