Mexican women won silver and bronze medals at the European Women's Mathematics Olympiad

Mexico came in 15th place out of 57 after the participation of four competing competing in the competition held in Eger, Hungary

As part of the celebration of the European Women's Mathematics Olympiad (EGMO), the Mexican team made up of four compatriots managed to win two silver medals and two bronze medals.

The event began on April 6 and will end on the 12th of the same month. This year, the Olympiad takes place in the city of Eger, Hungary, with the participation of Vicky Cantú and Ana Llanes, both from Mexico City, as well as Andrea Escalona, a native of Morelos and Cynthia López, from Guanajuato. Meanwhile, Nuria Sydykova was the tutor of the contestants and Myriam Hernandez was the leader of the team.

Through the Twitter account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), it was announced that Ana and Cynthia won the silver medal, while Vicky and Andrea won the bronze medal, so that the agency, as well as the Mexican embassy in Hungary, extended their congratulations to young Mexicans winners.

In this way, Mexico ranked 15th out of 57 countries that competed in the EGMO 2022.

The Mexican team traveled to Budapest, Hungary, on Monday, April 4, after a 24-hour trip, with stopovers in Spain and Germany. After their arrival, the compatriots began intense training as part of their preparation for the international competition.

However, it should be remembered that not everything was easy for Mexican women, because before arriving in the host country they encountered a series of adversities to be able to fly to Europe, since this year there was no funding from the federal government to cover the travel, lodging and food expenses of the contestants.

Because of the above, on several Facebook pages such as the Mexican Mathematical Society they made multiple posts to raise funds and donate them to the team that would represent Mexico at EGMO 2022.

According to the Federal District Mathematics Olympiad page, a total of 67 thousand pesos were raised through social media campaigns. Casa Córdoba also helped Mexican women cover the registration fee, while Aeromexico airline sponsored round-trip flights to Hungary.

2014 was the first year that Mexico participated in the European Women's Mathematics Olympiad. To date (taking into account yesterday's results), 5 gold medals, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals have been won.

In 2020, Mexico placed sixth among 53 participating countries, placing it in the top ten places for the third consecutive year. In that year he won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Finally, it should be noted that Vicky Cantú was the winner, along with Constanza Huerta, of the first National Women's Mathematics Olympiad, in which both won gold medals. For their part, Alina Sydykov and Natalia Malpica won silver medals and Marlen Alva, along with Salma Sydykov, won the bronze medals.

Vicky Cantú, likewise, won the gold medal in her participation in the 35th Mexican Mathematics Olympiad of 2021.
