A building on the Rambla Brava in Punta del Este, Uruguay, was robbed by criminals who took at least $20,000 in cash, a Rolex watch and various jewels. They entered five units of the Indigo Building, at stop 29, and opened a safety deposit box that gave them access to that kind of money.
It happened at the beginning of last week, in one of the units they entered. The data of whether there were other missing items in the rest of the departments did not transcend. When police personnel arrived at the scene, once the situation had been reported by the person in charge of the building, they were found to enter through violence in openings.
Until now, the manner of entry of criminals was unknown, since there were no fingerprints anywhere that could give IDs. The survey, carried out by the National Directorate of Scientific Police, established that latex gloves were used during the search for valuable objects and that at least two people entered, FM Gente reported.
According to the findings, the robbers entered the building complex, specifically Tower III, through a back door. Once inside it, they went to one of the apartments on the first floor and stayed there for several hours in search of valuables.
While there, they used latex gloves, to leave no traces, and they took with them tools such as bars and nails to be able to open doors, windows and safes, in addition to the existing chest-fortes in each apartment. They went up to the fourth floor, entering five units and then descended on the outside, using sheets, tied together to generate an extensive cloth rope.
The Maldonado Police Headquarters reported in an official statement about this situation in the early afternoon of last Wednesday: “It is known that the building located on Rambla Lorenzo Pacheco, stop 29 of Playa Brava, at unknown hours of the night had entered several apartments in Torre III.”
News sources announced that the total amount of money stolen would be about $80,000 from the four units of the Indigo Building, but the Police indicated that there were no reports of that amount of money so far and that they were only “versions”.
The investigation of what happened by the Investigations staff and the Prosecutor's Office of the 1st Turn of Maldonado, department that contains the city of Punta del Este, is continuing.
The other big robbery in Punta del Este in 2022
On February 16, a 70-year-old man was absent from home in a complex called Bulevar Park in Punta del Este. When he returned, he found that someone had entered his apartment, through the window that had been forced, and 100,000 dollars in cash and 20,000 in gold bars were stolen from him. The belongings were in a safe deposit box, which was opened, which is why he proceeded to file the complaint.
The Maldonado Headquarters launched an investigation that involved other robberies carried out on the same day and at the same time at that complex. Film records were collected, managing to identify a van in which three persons involved in the robbery were being transported. With the support of several Units, an operation was set up and the vehicle was located in the Solanas area.
After a police chase for attempted escape, it was found that it had been stolen on January 8, 2021 in Montevideo and that it was circulating with a denounced license plate. The three offenders were sentenced to months in prison.
