Kuélap: Video records the moment of the collapse of the archaeological zone

Regrettable. On the afternoon of Sunday, April 10, the collapse of part of the perimeter wall of the Kuélap, which is located in the province of Luya, Amazonas region, due to leaks caused by rains that have occurred in the area for several weeks.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the area had already been declared an emergency since February 11 of this year, which determined a series of actions for its conservation and implementation in value.

VISITS TO KUELAP SUSPENDED

Meanwhile, the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Amazonas (DDC) reported that tourist visits to the archaeological site of Kuelap were suspended due to the collapse of the wall.

The measure is in effect this Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12. During these days, specialists from the Department of Culture will carry out the relevant assessments and then take the actions to rehabilitate the affected area.

COLLAPSE OF THE WALL

It should be noted that the collapse of the perimeter wall of Kuélap occurred on Sunday around 17:00 hours. The measure was confirmed by the Ministry of Culture, which added that the closure of Kuelap “will allow to preserve the comprehensive safety of visitors and also to take the necessary emergency measures, as well as assess the damages caused.”

CAUSES

According to research carried out to date, lack of drainage is one of the main causes for the monument to be in danger of collapsing for weeks.

The DDC Amazonas recalled that in February of this year the Kuelap Archaeological Complex was declared an emergency by Vice-Ministerial Resolution No. 000040-2022-VMPCIC/MC, in order to carry out the technical steps and actions that guarantee the proper management of this heritage in the short, medium and long term.

RAINS IN AMAZON

Amazonas endures heavy rains so far this season, this rainfall has caused landslides, rivers surge and the activation of streams that have caused considerable personal and material damage.

In the last six months, this region has also endured two strong earthquakes and a large number of aftershocks that have also caused considerable material damage.
