“Face, useless and rigged”: Ricardo Anaya shook AMLO after results of the Mandate Revocation

The activist of National Action called on citizens to defend the INE, so that “the failure” of the Revocation will not be repeated in the 2024 presidential candidates

The former candidate for the presidency for the PAN called the democratic exercise “a complete failure”, after failing to reach the minimum percentage to be binding

Former presidential candidate Ricardo Anaya joined the wave of criticism against President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), following the publication of the preliminary results of the consultation for the Revocation of Mandate.

Even though just over 90% of the voters supported the stay of the Chief Executive, citizen participation was around 17 to 18%, which is why it was not binding since it did not accumulate the minimum 40% required by the National Electoral Institute (INE).

That is why the opposition side most strongly disqualified the exercise by pointing it out as a “complete failure”; Anaya was one of those who shared that position.

Through a video on his Twitter account, the National Action (PAN) militant argued his point by noting that the little more than 14 million votes that were collected were lower than those recorded in 2018, when AMLO won the presidency.

Thus, the blue and white insinuated that the popularity of López Obrador - as well as his party, Moreno Regeneración Nacional (Morena) - has declined during the four years of government.

Anaya Cortés even dismissed the fact that those close to the Fourth Transformation boasted of the “overwhelming majority” who were in favor of López Obrador: “The reality is that more than eight out of ten Mexicans decided not to endorse the farce with our presence,” he said.

It should be recalled that, despite pointing it out as a success, López Obrador attacked the INE again on the morning of April 11 because of the alleged boycott he orchestrated to not place enough squares.

Hence, the opposition's argument - and reiterated by Anaya - regarding its alleged loss of confidence reflected after the democratic exercise was invalidated.

“Our opponents say 'it's half the votes the president had in 2018'. Yes, but nothing more with a third of the boxes and with all the traps or boycotts of the INE that was not applied to put boxes everywhere,” he said.

However, Ricardo Anaya contradicted this accusation by stating that the body led by Lorenzo Córdova did “exemplarily” fulfill its constitutional duty - despite the cut of almost 5 billion pesos it suffered in the 2022 Federation Expenditure Budget (PEF).

With the review of 57,749 computed minutes, the INE reported that 16 million 478,944 people out of 92 participated in the democratic exercise of April 10 million 823 thousand 216 that make up the Nominal List.

Of this total, a citizen participation of 17.7% was obtained, that is, 22.3% less to reach the minimum percentage required of 40% for the results to be binding, so this democratic exercise will not have direct political effects.
