Dozens of passengers seeking to renew their passports at the Migration Office at Jorge Chávez International Airport missed their international flights due to a general failure in the document printing system that has so far not been solved and caused many to miss their flights and pay sums of up to 4 thousand dollars for rescheduling the date of your tickets.

From an early age, those affected waited inside the air terminal to be able to renew this travel document, which is essential for leaving the country, but in the face of the exaggerated delay many had to endure, the claims began, but the lack of information aggravated the situation where several passengers began to live in directly complain to migrant workers, who had to report failures in the system.

Frustration and despair gripped dozens of families who were waiting for more than 8 hours to process their passports at the airport, who were unable to board the plane that was mostly bound for Europe and the United States.

One of the affected women reported to RPP Noticias that the delay in the processing of passports caused them to lose their flights and had to pay more than 4,000 dollars for the date change of tickets for eight of her relatives.

Until 10 in the morning they did not give any information and people crowded in front of the migration office in the air terminal, which had to be guarded by security personnel.

Afterwards, the Minister of the Interior, Alfonso Chávarry, approached the Migrations headquarters on Avenida España, in Breña, to ask for explanations about the non-issuance of passports. The current superintendent, José Armando Fernández Campos, justified the situation by arguing that it is due to a system crash.

Chávarry indicated that if the problem is not solved, the chief of migration will be solely responsible, who later indicated that passports are already being printed

“What has happened is that due to the overload it has had these days for the long weekend that is coming to us, the system is not identifying the passport book. However, I have just entered and they are already printing the passports. This must be regularized over the course of the hours and we will be able to grant passports to each of the users who so request it, he said in a dialogue to Canal N.

He explained that the airport headquarters works with a very old operating system that was acquired in 2014. Technological advances cause these problems, operating systems become outdated and when they become overloaded they have these drawbacks. It is a system that was acquired during the government of Ollanta Humala that has technological obsolescence that was programmed for one million 200 thousand passports, we are already over 3 million passports and we are therefore asking the MEF for an investment project that allows us to change the system and we to avoid these inconveniences ”.

Regarding the situation of passengers who missed their flights or who have had to reschedule their trip, he said that they are already coordinating and explaining the problem to the airlines and having a more adequate departure, “right now we are printing inside the airport”.
