Through his Twitter account, the current senator and presidential candidate for the Historical Pact, Gustavo Petro, proposed a change of functions for the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation.
Petro's announcement coincides with the opening of an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office against the current Civil Status Registrar, Alexander Vega, who was strongly questioned for his work in the previous legislatures of March 13.
In this way, Margarita Cabello, current director of the Attorney General's Office, announced the opening of the case against Vega: “The investigation seeks to determine whether the registrar could commit disciplinary offenses related to alleged irregularities in the selection and contracting of the state and a possible omission in the functions of the control of voting and the training of juries”.
The official indicated that he would abide by the decision of the Attorney General's Office in a statement published last Friday: “We respect and abide by the various determinations of the disciplinary body. It will be the opportunity to demonstrate the proper performance of the electoral organization and its officials at the head of the Registrar's Office in relation to the electoral contest of 13 March.”

Gustavo Petro, as the visible head of the Historical Pact, repeatedly denounced the possible existence of fraud against the Senate list led by the writer Gustavo Bolivar. In the ballot, thousands of supporters of his political cause registered as observers and participated in the counts that, in the end, favored his movement, granting it a majority in the House and Senate.

The scenario: Attorney General's Office as a judicial entity
The proposal of the senator and candidate to transfer to the Public Prosecutor's Office to the Judicial branch would imply a root transformation of the entity's essence, characterized as the guarantor of the community in the exercise of its rights.
According to the entity's mission, the Attorney General's Office in Colombia “is responsible for investigating, punishing, intervening and preventing irregularities committed by government officials, public officials, individuals who perform public functions and agencies of the Colombian State.”
Attributing judicial powers to it, in the style of a “large anti-corruption prosecutor's office” as suggested by the candidate, would entail a drastic change to the penal code with regard to the Public Prosecutor's Office as a subject of procedure, in accordance with Law 906 of 2004.
Gustavo Petro did not delve into his proposal after issuing it on his account, which is followed by more than four million people. The candidate later issued another tweet commenting on the issue of pensions in Colombia, citing an article by El Espectador that addresses the issue.
He wrote: “Pensions: business or law? Why not think that three million seniors and majors who do not receive a pension today receive 500,000 pesos a month and that current pensioners increase their pensions at the same rate as the minimum wage? ”.
It should be noted that Petro has been a strong critic of the current pension system in Colombia and has proposed modifications to that system in various academic debates and forums.
