From April 10 to April 13, Colombian President Iván Duque will be in New York (United States) on a diplomatic visit. The main objective of the trip is to publicize the country's progress related to the implementation of the Peace Agreement. Likewise, the president will talk about achievements in terms of women's equity, economic reactivation and energy transition.
Regarding the agreement, it was indicated that the president will speak promptly about his policy of Peace with Legality, which has been championed by his Government. Duque will disclose data on this point to the Security Council of the United Nations (UN). This intervention is key in the visit, not only because it is the first time that the Colombian president will intervene in this commission, but because this is the one led by the Mission for Verification of the Agreement, whose mandate was extended until October 31 of this year.
Likewise, at United Nations Headquarters, Duque will participate in the forum 'Peace with Legality: The Road Map for Implementation' and will speak at the UN Peacebuilding Commission session. The Government will also present its progress in the area of gender equity and the issue of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, which is now a State policy to the international organization.
During spaces where the president is not speaking publicly, he will hold some private meetings with key officials. Among the scheduled meetings are a meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres; a meeting with the President of the Security Council, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon; and a meeting with the global director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Achim Steiner.
It should be noted that the statement on the Duque Government's progress in taking into account the Peace Agreement is not limited to the UN. The president will also lead a discussion on Peace with Legality at Columbia University. At the event he will launch the English edition of the book 'Peace with Legality: A Factual Path to Peace' and answer some questions from former Colombian Minister José Antonio Ocampo.
Advancing the agenda, and addressing other issues, on the morning of Monday, April 11, Duque will meet with executives from the investment banking group Goldman Sachs, led by Dina Powell, Global Head of Sustainability and Inclusive Growth. He will then have lunch with international investors, to whom he will explain the “good time and challenges of the Colombian economy and the advantages of investing in Colombia”.
Duque will then visit the headquarters of the New York Stock Exchange, where he will meet with the entity's managers and will be the keynote speaker at the international launch forum of the strategy 'Green Taxonomy of Colombia: A Robust and Standardized Framework for Classifying Sustainable Economic Activities and Financial Assets' . This event has two segments, one on mobilizing public and private capital for sustainability, and the next on Colombia's roadmap for adaptation to climate change and carbon neutrality by 2050.
It is expected that, around 4 p.m. and to conclude the day's agenda, Duque will be at the close of the stock exchange's operations and make the traditional ring of the bell.
A special event is planned for Tuesday, April 12, during which President Duque will award Susan Segal, president of the Society of the Americas/Council of the Americas thought center, with the Order of Boyacá, in the degree of Grand Cross. In the evening, the president will attend a dinner with the private sector at the headquarters of the organization.
Finally, on Wednesday, April 13, Duque will participate in a discussion with Bloomberg on the energy transition, renewable energy, clean mobility and the hydrogen route in Colombia. This event is moderated by Ethan Zindler, Head of Bloomberg New Energy Finance for the Americas.
To address these issues, President Duque will be accompanied by Vice President and Chancellor Marta Lucía Ramírez; President's Chief of Staff María Paula Correa; Director of Administrative Department of the Presidency of the Republic (Dapre) Víctor Muñoz; Presidential Counselor for Stabilization and Consolidation Emilio Archila; and the Colombian Ambassador to the UN, Guillermo Fernández. Likewise, the Ministers of Finance, José Manuel Restrepo; of Environment, Carlos Eduardo Correa; and of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa, will participate.
