Since mid-March, Colombian Giovanni Urshela has been playing for the Minnesota Twins, after an exchange made by the New York Yankees, and until this weekend Urshela was able to make his debut with the new squad.
Now, the Colombian's new team had the first game of the new major league season on Opening Day. The Minnesota team lost 2-1 against the Seattle Mariners; for their part, the Cartagenero was responsible for scoring a home run to start moving their numbers in this new ninth.
The wait is over for the world of baseball and its fans. After a while without this sport, the matches for Opening Day finally began, as this break was caused by problems between teams and players, which ended in a work stoppage that delayed the competition for almost a week.
For his part, Urshela started the game at Target Field as third baseman and fourth at bat. In the middle of the bottom of the fourth inning, the Colombian hit a home run that came from a curveball launched by starter Robbie Ray. In this way, the ex-Yankee began his new season with the Twins.
Although Urshela scored a score, the sailors took the duel after the performance of Robbie Ray, who added seven innings allowing three hits and the feat of the Colombian baseball player.
After three seasons, the New York Yankees stopped having a Colombian in their squad. Giovanny Urshela's departure from the New York team was announced through social media. “The New York Yankees announced today that they acquired INF Josh Donaldson, INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa and C Ben Rortvedt of the Minnesota Twins in exchange for C Gary Sanchez and INF Gio Urshela,” the Yankees posted on their Twitter account.
It should be noted that the Minnesota Twins play in the Central Division of the American League, becoming champion in 2020, and play their home matches at Target Field, located in downtown Minneapolis. In addition, it has three world series: 1924, 1987 and 1991.
On the other hand, at the end of November last year, the Colombian had reached an agreement with the Yankees to extend his bond for the 2022 season. According to reports, the new contract was around $6.55 million, and in this way, wage arbitration had been avoided. This refers to when a player and a team cannot reach a deal to define the salary, so they go to a hearing between both parties and in which they are heard by an independent referee, who issues a ruling.
For the Yankees, Urshela played a total of 291 games, hit 296 hits, 41 home runs and drove 153 runs. In his first season, the cartagenero surprised in records after hitting for .314 in 132 matches played with 139 hits and 21 home runs. The latter allowed him to surpass the numbers of his compatriot Orlando Cabrera, who scored 17 with the extinct Montreal Expos, in 2003.
