Cardinal Barreto says that many feel disappointed in Pedro Castillo's government

There have been many criticisms of Pedro Castillo's government after one of the most troubled weeks of his eight months in power. The cardinal and archbishop of Huancayo, Pedro Barreto also questioned the way in which the head of state has run the country and called for a different political class so that they can “serve, not serve”.

“At this time there were negative comments,” he said about the demonstrations generated after the price hike in various products. “Many feel disappointed because they bet on a rural teacher with whom we thought we could all aspire to a new situation,” he told the press shortly before celebrating the first Holy Week Eucharist. In addition, he stressed that in Pedro Castillo's personal and supportive space “there were many signs of corruption.”

“The people are tired of ambiguities and this use of political power for the benefit of groups and not society, politics is to seek the common good,” Barreto said. Faced with this situation, the Catholic authority urged civil society to unite to reject violence. While he did not refer directly to the call for new general elections, he mentioned the need for political renewal where people with questions against it do not take place.

“We have to come together to find channels and rehabilitate politics and that criminals do not enter the practice of politics, and I say criminals because many are accused of not respecting women, that is the cry of the people, politicians have to be honest people and serve, not serve themselves. I call on society to unite for peace and justice,” he added.

AWKWARD MOMENT

Faced with the demands of the population generated by the price crisis, Cardinal Barreto tried to be a mediator between representatives of transport and farmers' guilds and government representatives. However, during the meeting in Huancayo, the protesters' representatives disagreed with his presence and requested the appearance of the President Pedro Castillo after the accusation of the latter by calling them paid.

“It was a very difficult and complicated dialogue table, first because people were outraged by the comments made by President Pedro Castillo. This has permeated all the dialogue, they insisted that Pedro Castillo be here to ask for forgiveness. They also heard from the ministers of state that each one in their sector has made very concrete proposals to make it feasible to solve the problems and demands that farmers and transport workers have,” he told his retirement from the event.

On that occasion, Barreto also invoked dialogue as a way to end the crisis that affects several families in all regions of the country. In addition, he said he hoped that the Council of Ministers that would take place in Huancayo “will be the end point of this long agony that we cannot bear anymore.” However, that event that happened on Thursday, April 7, was marked by anecdotes such as the intervention of Minister Betssy Chavez, the vice-president's singing, Aníbal Tores's praise of Adolfo Hitler and the requests of some leaders that President Castillo resign from the presidency of the republic.

Congress and the Office of the Ombudsman have already submitted letters urging Pedro Castillo to step aside in order to defuse the crisis of governance and economic.
