On the afternoon of this Friday, April 8, Cartagena baseball player Giovanny Urshela officially made his debut in the 2022 season of the Major League Baseball (MLB), now wearing the uniform of the Twins, a Minneapolis franchise that made his home debut against the Seattle Mariners.
Although the Mellizos debuted with a 1-2 defeat against the Marineros, Gio reported on this day with a deep hit in the fourth inning of the match played at Target Field.
In its premiere after leaving the New York Yankees, Urshela had no problem raising the blow and recording the first and only race of the game for his own and placing 1-2 on the board.
The Colombian started the match as the third player and fourth in order at bat, and responded to that confidence of manager Rocco Baldelli. In his first turn, Urshela had been dominated by pitcher Drew Steckenrider with a ground-breaking shortstop, and in his second appearance he got revenge to discount in the game.
Gio's impressive blow happened at 397 feet between center and left. The home run was in front of left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray, current pitcher of the sailors of the Washington state franchise in the American League and Western division.
In the next turn, the Colombian third baseman hit for double play on his last visit to the plate, as in the bottom of the ninth inning he was replaced by emerging hitter Luis Arráez.
Urshela finished his 3-1 performance with a home run, just two days after hitting the first at the close of spring training, in which his team reported one RBIs and one scored with his interventions against Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves and Pittsburg Pirates.
Left-handed batsman Robbie Ray (1-0) won the Mariners win by pitcher Drew Steckenrider, who claimed the save, while Joe Ryan (0-1) claimed the defeat for the Twins.
A home run by outfielder Mitch Haniger in the first act was enough for the Mariners to beat the Twins. The Urshela team suffered their first setback of the regular season, but they already think about what their journey will be this Saturday, April 9 when they measure strength again in their second home game. The game will start at 1:10pm Colombian time. Sonny Gray will open for the locals, while Logan Gilbert will open for the visit.
Minnesota's calendar for the remainder of the month is organized as follows:
April 9, 10 and 11: vs. Seattle sailors.
April 12 and 13: vs. The Angeles Dodgers.
April 15, 16, 17 and 18: vs. Boston Red Sox.
April 19, 20 and 21: vs. Kansas City Royals.
April 22, 23 and 24: vs. Chicago White Sox.
April 26, 27 and 28: vs. Detroit Tigers.
April 29 and 30 and May 1: vs. Rays from Tampa Bay.
Meanwhile, the Colombian baseball player hopes to be one of the main bastions of the Twins, who last year finished last in the Central Division of the American League in major league baseball. The offensive average of the 30-year-old Colombian batsman is 333 just at the beginning of a season that is going through complicated negotiations between the league players' union and the MLB itself.
