Ukraine reported that there are more than 15,000 missing and 21 hospitals destroyed

The Ukrainian Government reported this Saturday that more than 15,000 people are missing and that more than twenty hospitals have been destroyed since the beginning of the Russian invasion of the country.

The number of missing persons was announced by the Ombudsman, Ludmila Denisova, in comments collected by Ukrinform. “We have counted more than 15,000 cases with identified names and the last place they were seen,” he said.

The Minister of Health, Viktor Liashko, also reported that Russian attacks have destroyed 307 medical centers and destroyed 21 hospitals since the beginning of the invasion, on February 24. “These hospitals cannot be rebuilt and new ones will have to be built in their place,” he said in comments also collected by Ukrinform.

The minister stressed the need to deploy more field hospitals in the western regions, since in the eastern combat zone injured people can only receive first aid before being evacuated, so many do not survive the transfer.

In its latest report released this Saturday, the United Nations found that 1,766 civilians have died and 2,383 were injured since the beginning of the invasion.

“From 4 a.m. on 24 February, when the armed attack by the Russian Federation began on Ukraine, until 00 a.m. on 8 April, the High Commissioner has recorded 1,766 deaths and 2,383 injuries in Ukraine,” according to the report.

The deceased have been identified as 452 men, 284 women, 43 boys and 27 girls, as well as 69 children and 891 adults pending identification. The injured have been identified as 272 men, 206 women, 45 girls and 44 boys, as well as 126 children and 1,602 adults pending identification.

By areas of control, the United Nations estimates 1,696 dead and 2,114 injured in territory still controlled by the Ukrainian Government, counting the 560 dead and 944 injured in areas under its control of the disputed Donetsk and Lugansk regions in the east of the country. In the area under the control of the militias of these self-proclaimed republics, the UN has found 70 dead and 269 injured.

The United Nations points out that most civilian deaths and injuries were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a “wide area of impact”, through heavy artillery, the use of rocket platforms, as well as air strikes.

The UN notes that the real figures “are considerably higher, especially in government-controlled territory and especially in recent days”, because there is a lack of information on some places where intense hostilities have taken place and many details of the casualties “are still pending corroboration.”

The United Nations also “takes note” of the report of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, according to which as of 0800 (local time) on 9 April, 176 children had been killed and 324 injured.
