This week there was a serious emergency due to heavy rains in Abriaquí, Antioquia. At least thirteen people lost their lives due to the sudden and subsequent avalanche in a river that crosses several towns in the department.
The incident occurred between the night of last Wednesday 6 and the morning of Thursday, April 7. In addition to the fatalities, ten injured and one missing person are reported.
Although the emergency occurred in Abriaquí, reports say that most of the fatalities were residents of Frontino, a neighbouring municipality. Thus, some families and the municipal mayor's office decided to hold a collective burial in the coliseum of that town.
According to the mayor, Jorge Hugo Elejalde, the community has expressed its desire to hold burial collectively to dismiss the fatal victims left by this tragedy.
Likewise, he regretted what happened in the neighboring municipality and sent a message of condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the emergency due to the heavy rains that have occurred in Antioquia during this first winter season.
“IMMENSE PAIN AND TOTAL SOLIDARITY. We frontineños are deeply dismayed by the events experienced last night in La Antigua, municipality of Abriaquí, many of our countrymen are among the victims and disappeared. Our total solidarity with the wounded and with the families of the deceased and disappeared,” said the mayor through his social networks.
In addition, he reported that the municipal administration is carrying out a donation campaign to provide support to families who have been affected by this event. According to the local president, donations are being received at the premises of the Mayor's Office of Frontino.
The tragedy in Abriaqui, Antioquia
The heavy rains of this winter season have caused several emergencies in Antioquia, including this one that claimed the lives of 13 people.
According to what authorities have reported, last Wednesday's rainfall caused the sudden rise of a river that passes near the El Porvenir mine in Abriaquí. There, several people who were still working were surprised by the avalanche from which some were able to escape but others could not.
Jaime Enrique Gómez, director of the Dagran, said there was no alert for a similar emergency in the area. For this reason, the workers at the El Porvenir mine, located in La Antigua, did not have time to react and ended up affected by the avalanche.
