The number of victims after the avalanche in Abriaqui, Antioquia rises to 13

Mourning continues to shock Antioquia, because after the avalanche that buried a mine in the village of La Antigua in the municipality of Abriaquí, search engines try to find the last one missing, since yesterday the 13th victim of this regrettable event was found, which swept away the hopes of several families antioquia.

The Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia (Dagran) stated: “According to the report of the Unified Command Post installed after emergency in Abriaquí, the number of deaths on torrential avenue rises to 13. Operating entities continue with the search and rescue of the missing person. We are still present in the area and vigilant.” .

The victim was identified as 22-year-old Jader Eliécer Ortiz, who was near the emergency zone, and, apparently, was dragged by force from the ravine that transits through this area. It should be noted that the preliminary balance left eight people injured and one disappeared, which they hope to find in the next few hours, as the community has joined efforts to search for this body downstream, a task that has been complicated by the weather conditions that keep this region on alert.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) warns that a large capacity of relief agencies has been available in the area, in order to reduce the risk and respond promptly, the Unit stated: “Firefighters Frontino, Cañas gordas, San Jerónimo, Sopetrán, Civil Defense Santa Fe de Antioquia, Mining Salvage- Buritica. Ambulances were also activated by the Emergency and Emergency Regulatory Center -CRUE- Santa Fe de Antioquia, Cañasgordas and Frontino. The Volunteer Firefighters of El Carmen del Viboral, Cañasgordas, Sopetrán, Sabaneta and Ponalsar are being held at enlistments.

Most of the victims were from the municipality of Frontino, who were identified as: Fatima del Socorro Hidalgo David, Juan Pablo Marín Arango, Gildardo Yague Aroca, José Alejandro Garcés Tobón, Sebastián Sepúlveda Zapata, Jader Eliecer Ortiz Aguirre, Ferney Ernesto Salas and Luis Carlos Higuita Vargas.

It is important to bear in mind that, according to the Dagran report, there were no casualties inside the mine, as the tragedy came at the time when they were about to move to their homes, as they were getting their backpacks ready to leave their workplace, in this case, unfortunately, the impact was on the local casino, where employees shared their food.

So far, four of the injured people have already received medical discharge, while the rest of those affected remain under the supervision of doctors in hospitals in surrounding municipalities and Medellín. Most have fractures in the lower limbs and contaminated wounds, their evolution is favorable for the time being and positive progress is expected around their health condition.

The tragedy arrived around 6pm on April 6th. One of the survivors, Hernán Darío Carvajal Urrego, told El Colombiano that at the time of the tragedy some colleagues were having dinner at the casino. A downpour caused the ravine to grow and gradually enter the courtyard of this place. The sudden surge reached the place and, although some comrades tried to flee, they were swept away by the power of water.

Carvajal reported that he tried to climb to the top of this place, but the current held him by pressing him in the middle of the beating. However, he gained strength and broke the sticks that stopped him to try to get out, he heard the cries for help of one of his companions who was being subdued by water, and he managed to save her.
